Dragons in Fantasy Literature

The term dragon has been used to describe many different kinds of mythical beings that may not be related. Dragons are usually associated with European folklore and literature; however, dragons can also be found in other traditions. These creatures typically have reptilian qualities, may breathe fire or poison, live for centuries, hoard gold and jewels, and are fierce.

Dragons are often depicted as symbols of power and wisdom in many worldwide traditions. Dragons represent strength, courage, knowledge, and sometimes even evil in these stories. The earliest known written reference to a dragon comes from China around 1000 BC. It is believed that this creature was used by Chinese emperors to guard their treasures. There were also many different types of dragons throughout history: some had wings while others did not; some could fly while others walked on land. Some dragons lived underground, but most lived above ground.

People's general conception of dragons is that they are evil and monstrous, but this is not always the case. They can be benevolent creatures. Most people's broad vision of dragons is that they are evil and monstrous. Still, the reality is that they vary in personality. Some are cunning and terrifying, others dutiful and tender. Dragons can be found throughout fantasy literature, even as the protagonist's closest companion. Although many dragon species are dangerous to humans, one can't help but wonder if there is a moral compass hiding deep within their hearts.

Dragons are mythical creatures typically found in the pages of fantasy literature. These monstrous beasts have been seen to guard various precious items, each with their own unique magical power. They have also been drawn into wars between armies of humans, elves, and dwarves. With their untold power and wisdom, dragons are often shown as the ultimate antagonists in the fantasy world. However, this story has another side; many authors portray them as benevolent guardians who protect those around them from harm. In fact, some even go so far as to say that these monsters could actually be our friends!

The Bad: when dragons are seen as evil, they have a dark appearance and often speak in a frightening voice

The popular idea of a dragon is not always a positive one, as frequently, they are seen as an evil entity. Dragons in fantasy literature have a dark appearance and often speak frighteningly. This image has been perpetuated by Hollywood movies such as The Hobbit (1937), where Smaug was portrayed with his long tail wrapped around Bilbo's leg while he slept. Many people believe that all dragons should look like this because it makes them seem more powerful and dangerous. However, the truth is that many different types of dragons exist; some are friendly to humans, others are aggressive or even venomous.

A dragon in fantasy literature, we see that they can be both good and bad. In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, dragons are fierce and aggressive monsters that live in the Lonely Mountain guarding their treasure hoard for Smaug. However, in the book The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill, dragons are portrayed as gentle creatures who can be helpful and dangerous to humans. In the popular RPG, Dungeons & Dragons, these monstrous beasts are seen as good, evil, and neutral. They have spawned numerous novels and inspirations for many fantasy authors.
