Domhnall Gleeson Says That He Would Come Back To 'Star Wars' On This One Condition

Makes Sense

Being in a Star Wars film, for most, is a high badge of honor. But it also comes with a lot of work, a lot of fan attention, and a lot of questions about the series and characters in it. It is a lifelong commitment for most actors that can be a blessing and a curse. Even other actors who are a part of some other large franchise experience this with series like Doctor Who, Star Trek, and anything from Marvel, just to name a few. Long after the movies are done, actors will still be asked about their roles in the iconic series. Then they will always get to the big question: Do you think you will ever return to the role?

There are just as many Star Wars actors who would love to return and play a role in the series as there are actors who are finished with the universe entirely. John Boyega said that he would be open to returning as long as he was not the only one of the cast coming back, and Oscar Isaac said he thinks he is done with the role of Poe Dameron and the Star Wars universe. Daisy Ridley seemed to leave things a little open-ended by saying, “Never say never.” Either way, it is always interesting to speculate about the possibility of stars returning to their titular roles in some form or fashion. Now, another member of the sequel trilogy has provided some thoughts.

Domhnall Gleeson recently said in an interview with ComicBook.com that he would be open to returning to Star Wars, but on one condition: the story has to be good.

“A couple people have asked because there is so much stuff in the Star Wars universe, but it’s always about if the story’s good, you know?”

However, he didn’t think he would be disappointed or begrudged if he didn’t get to come back, and he was happy with the work he has done in the series.

“So yeah, bring it on, if so, and if not, I think I did plenty. Three movies is a lot.”

It is great to know that he would like to return to the films if the story is interesting. It is also good that he is not looking to just repeat what was done in the last three movies. Actors always want new interesting things to play and test their skills with, and I understand why he would want that one caveat. That being said, his work was great from The Force Awakens to The Rise of Skywalker. General Hux was a character people loved to hate, which is a testament to his skill as an actor. Gleeson even seemed to really love the character and said he wished he could have seen more of Hux as the double agent. He said in the same interview:

“It would’ve been nice to stick around a little bit longer, for sure. It would’ve been nice to see the spy thing play out a little bit, but J.J. [Abrams] knows what he’s doing, and I heard a kind of gasp in the cinema when it happened, so I guess he was right.”

Although his death in The Rise of Skywalker would make that difficult, Gleeson said he thought, in the end, it was the right move. That doesn’t mean that has to be the end of General Hux in Star Wars, though. The Mandalorian, which is set in between Episodes VI and VII, seems to be propelling us closer to the rise of the First Order and the events of Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. It would be entirely possible for him to show up somewhere in that show in the distant future. This is also a world where one-third of the story has been told in prequel movies, so there is always the chance of a prequel to the sequel trilogy in which we see Hux rise to power, or a glimpse of his and Kylo Ren’s relationship souring during the military campaign of the First Order. Regardless, it is nice to know that such a talented actor like Domhnall Gleeson is up to return and help tell more stories in Star Wars.
