Transforming your business in the digital age can be overwhelming, but it's crucial for success. We've distilled our research findings into six guiding principles that will help you navigate this journey, whether you're just starting out or already making progress. This trend of transformation is at the beginning and those that do not transform will become relics of the past. We have created a list of the most important concepts to help during this exciting, yet scary time.

1. Recognize the emotional impact: Digital transformation is a disruptive process that can leave leaders and employees feeling bewildered and exhausted. In a hyperconnected world, competitors can appear from anywhere, making it essential to create differentiated customer experiences. Prioritizing the employee experience is vital for success. Employees are especially weary if said transformations for various reasons but generallly those reasons surround how are these changes going to affect me or is there even going to be a me here after the digital transformation.

2. Align around the customer: Vision and strategy are important, but without a shared purpose, employees won't fully engage in building a digitally mature organization. Connect the dots between your identity, your customers, and how digital technology can help you deliver value. A shared sense of purpose will keep employees committed and foster collaboration. Employees want to know they matter and want to be able to trust their employers that they are not being replaced by a computer during the digital transformation. Let them know their jobs might change but the change will be for the better and if it is not we can always go back to the old way of doing things.

3. Upskill your talent: Many organizations lack the right talent to compete in the digital era. Invest in upskilling your workforce and creating digital positions. In the future, technical backgrounds will be increasingly valuable for senior leaders. It’s a fact technology is an efficiency beast and employees that understand how systems work with one another are a hit commodity and for good reason.

4. Manage the power of data: Don't aim for a data-driven culture; aim for a data-informed one. Data should complement expertise and experience, not replace them. Use data to challenge the status quo and drive innovation when it comes to processes and procedures.

5. Foster inclusive problem-solving: Executives often lose touch with frontline employees and customers as they climb the corporate ladder. Empower your employees to take ownership of customer problems and innovate on their behalf. Design your organization for agile problem-solving.

6. Embrace an outside-in perspective: Continuous learning is key to success in the digital era. Expose your employees to innovation hubs and different industries to inspire creativity and curiosity. Foster a collaborative ecosystem mindset with management, workers and vendors. Hire consultants and software developers to help with these changes. Lastly, be as involved in this as you were on day one of your business. Everyone’s nterests are different even if they appear to be the same. Do not let others unsupervised participate unsupervised during the development of said assets. Extraordinary change requires the business owners time and failure to participate can lead to an enormous amount of problems down the road.

Successfully navigating the digital transformation journey requires a shift in mindset and behavior from leaders. By following these principles, you can build a digitally mature organization that thrives in today's dynamic economy. Not doing anything will not make this transformation go away but if your business does nothing, it may very well be left in the past and leave you with nothing. On the other hand if your business digitally transforms while you are asleep at the wheel you maybe left behind.
