Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker ended the sequel trilogy in 2019, around the time that Lucasfilm took the Star Wars universe to a new direction with the groundbreaking hit TV series The Mandalorian, the second season of which premieres October 30 on Disney+. The show takes place after Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and long before the rise of the First Order, the authoritarian regime that is a threat to the galaxy when Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens comes around. Since the hype from the last trilogy has died down, we are now at a time where information about the direction that Star Wars has been taking is coming out. The Rise of Skywalker received mixed reviews from critics and fans, many of whom were upset with certain decision they made, including Rey’s lineageand Kylo Ren’s redemption. Finn actor John Boyega was upset and unsatisfied with how the narrative handled his character throughout the trilogy. Many fans were upset with how certain pay-offs played out after they were set up in previous films.

In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Daisy Ridley, who portrayed Rey, revealed more details about her character’s parentage, which continued to change even when The Rise of Skywalker came around. One possibility that was considered was having Rey be a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“At the beginning [Lucasfilm] were toying with an Obi-Wan connection. There were different versions and at one point she was no one.”

Daisy Ridley also said that the details of Rey's bloodline was changed too many times during the pre-production and production.

“It came to Episode IX and JJ pitched me the film and they were like, ‘Oh yeah, Palpatine’s grandaddy,’ and I was like, ‘Awesome,’ and then two weeks later he was like, ‘Oh we’re not sure…’ So it kept changing. So even as we were filming I wasn’t sure what the answer was going to be.”

Audiences were concerned over Rey’s parentage. Even director JJ Abrams, director of The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker, did not know who she was. Many fans of Star Wars were very critical of the decisions made in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. It feels like directors JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson had different views and tried taking the trilogy in different directions. However, the idea of Rey being a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi was one of the popular theories. Fans were curious about which bloodline Rey could be a part of thanks to her strong connection to the Force. However, many audiences were divided and shocked that Rey turned out to be Emperor Palpatine’s descendant. Ultimately, Rey chose to be a Skywalker, but the Rey Palpatine twist still left a sour taste for some fans. Given these comments about the Kenobi connection, it is clear that the creative people at Lucasfilm did not have a concrete plan regarding Rey's lineage.
