Crimson Dawn Has Become A Huge Player In The Universe

Since writer Greg Pak took over the reins as the writer for Darth Vader in 2020, there have been several connections to the sequel trilogy, as he promised there would be during his appearance at Comic-Con@Home 2020. However, the one thing he did not mention was how many connections there would be to the prequel era. The era once thought left behind is again an integral part of the overall story.

As the third volume of Darth Vader began in February 2020, Sabe, Queen Amidala's most trusted handmaiden and known as the Queen's Shadow, made her unexpected return accompanied by a group of freedom fighters known as the Amidalans. Their mission: to hunt down whoever was responsible for her queen's death. As Sabe and her band of rebels continue their search, Crimson Dawn, led by Qi'ra, rises from the ashes of the criminal underworld to secure their place at the top of the food chain. And now it appears that Sabe and Crimson Dawn are sharing beds. Oh, what a tangled web we weave.

Coming out of the War of the Bounty Hunters crossover, Darth Vader is tasked by the Emperor to track down and destroy Crimson Dawn and anyone associated with them. In the meantime, Qi'ra has sent agents to infiltrate some of the most powerful crime syndicates in the galaxy, including the Empire. Despite wishing to keep on his search for young Skywalker, Vader complies with the Emperor's order, teaming up with the Amidalans in an uneasy collaboration. Unfortunately for them, the Amidalans are unaware Vader is actually the former Jedi, Anakin Skywalker (spoiler alert). Owing to their ignorance, Vader is seen by the rebels as a hero with a cause.

In the final pages of Darth Vader #18, Sabe is seen on Polis Masa, approaching the medical facility where Padme gave birth to Luke and Leia. However, as she stumbles upon an old video of Padme speaking about Anakin, she notices the video has been tampered with. Vader's damaged, but still functioning investigator droid is nearby, off to the side. The droid recognized Sabe and asked her if she found what she sought. Sabe reveals that she is seeking Vader and is unsure what she will do when she locates him.

Little does she know that Vader did not kill Anakin or Padme, but Anakin became Vader. Vader convinced himself that Anakin was a separate entity and did nothing to persuade Sabe otherwise. Though now it seems Sabe is beginning to put the puzzle pieces together. Sabe is not easily tricked. Even though she is unsure what she will do when she finds Vader, it is possible Sabe could confront Vader on who he really is, though this is a touchy subject for the big guy and probably not good for Sabe's health.

Another possibility is that Sabe could work with Vader to bring down Crimson Dawn, essentially replacing Aphra as his new right hand and working with Ochi of Bestoon. If Qi'ra and Sabe were to join forces, it could become one of the strongest alliances outside the Empire or Rebellion. Qi'ra is hyper-focused on obtaining her goals for the Dawn, and Sabe is driven by her unrelenting loyalty to Padme. It will make for an exciting ride as The Book of Boba Fett draws near, and from the looks of the TV spots, Fett is recruiting crime syndicates into his inner circle.

There are 5+ years between Darth Vader #18 and The Book of Boba Fett, so there is plenty of time for stories to pan out. Obviously, Vader will not perish at the hands of Sabe, but could Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) appear in the Fett series? What about Sabe (Keira Knightley) herself? At this point, anything is possible in Star Wars.
