As the series' release date grows closer, Star Wars fans hype for Ahsoka is building. The series stars Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, the former Jedi Padawan of Anakin Skywalker, as she works to prevent the former Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn from potentially renewing the Empire. The series will pick up some of the dangling plot threads from the animated series Star Wars: Rebels, with a number of that series' characters, including Thrawn, ace pilot Hera Syndulla, and of course, Mandalorian weapons-master Sabine Wren, making their live action debut in Ahsoka.

The recently released second trailer dropped a bomb on fans, hinting that Sabine may have undergone some level of Jedi training under Ahsoka in the lead up to the new series. Now, there has been some speculation that Ahsoka may include Sabine undergo an important Jedi right of passage: Obtaining her very own lightsaber. Let's look at what has brought Sabine to this point.

Sabine and the Darksaber

In the early seasons of Star Wars: Rebels, Sabine's main role was to serve as the Ghost crew's resident weapon and ballistics expert, a position greatly aided by her Mandalorian heritage. Lightsaber battles were the realm of Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger, the Jedi of the group. However, this changes during the series third season, when Sabine stumbles upon the Darksaber among the treasures horded by Darth Maul, and sensing it's importance, takes the weapon with her.

Sabine presents the Darksaber to fellow Mandalorian rebel Fenn Rau, who explains it's significance as a symbol of leadership among their people. Sabine is reluctantly convinced to take up the Saber in the hope of bringing the remaining Mandalorians to the side of the rebellion, with Kanan training her in the use of the blade. Unfortunately, the Mandalorians, most notably Sabine's Mother, Ursa, reject her claim on the Darksaber because she had not won it in battle, and it is taken by Gar Saxon, who rules over the Mandalorians as an Imperial puppet.

After borrowing Ezra's lightsaber, Sabine challenges Saxon, defeating him and truly winning the Darksaber as her own. However, Sabine does not intend to keep the saber, only agreeing to wield it as an interim leader until a suitable Manda'lor can be found. She eventually passes it on to Lady Bo-Katan Kryze. Some fans believe the Darksaber still belongs to Sabine since it was not won away from her, although this may now be a moot point after the weapon was destroyed in The Mandalorian's season three finale.

Ezra Bridger's lightsaber

In both Ahsoka trailers so far, Sabine is seen using a green lightsaber in battle against Shin Hati. It is widely assumed that this is the lightsaber that belonged to her close friend and fellow rebel Ezra Bridger. The saber was Ezra's second, his first having been destroyed by Darth Vader in the season two finale of Rebels. Sabine has used Ezra's lightsaber before, in the aforementioned duel against Gar Saxon that won her the Darksaber.

Fans believe that Sabine most likely claimed the lightsaber after Ezra's disappearance into the unknown regions, and has held onto it ever since. There have even been theories proposing that Sabine's attachment to the saber, and Ezra, could have caused issues in her training with Ahsoka, possibly even preventing them from reaching the point in which a young Jedi would usually build a saber of their very own.

However, there is one very big hint that Sabine may undertake a quest for her own lightsaber in Ahsoka.

Enter Huyang

Huyang, voiced by Doctor Who star David Tennant, is a character who made his first appearance in The Clone Wars animated series. An ancient Architect droid of unknown origin, Huyang resides in the Jedi Temple, where he is known for helping Jedi Younglings build their first lightsaber. The droid's most prominent appearance thus far is in a three-episode Clone Wars arc in which Ahsoka and Master Yoda chaperone Huyang and a group of Younglings to the planet Ilum, where they will obtain the Kyber crystals around which their lightsabers will be crafted.

Huyang is set to make his live-action debut in Ahsoka, with Tennant reprising his role as the droid's voice. He has appeared in both trailers so far. While excited, some fans were initially left scratching their heads at Huyang's return, wondering where the Architect droid would fit into Ahsoka's plot. However, if Ahsoka wants Sabine to have a lightsaber of her own, it makes perfect sense why she would bring Huyang on board.

This theory fits with a shot from the latest trailer depicting Ahsoka, Huyang, and Sabine on a ship together, with some now speculating that the latter may be being taken on her own pilgrimage to Ilum to earn a Kyber crystal. If so, the series has a chance to deliver some interesting lightsaber lore to fans who prefer to stick with live-action content.

We could be in for some meaningful moments when Ahsoka hits Disney Plus on August 23.
