"So... it really is you."

His eyes were so far away. It was almost as if he couldn't see her, even though he was right in front of her. The young woman's heart pounding in her chest betrayed her. Deep down, even though she knew that he was the enemy she couldn't stop the ache that had started spreading within her heart.

She looked away, averting her gaze away from him. It was too painful to meet his eyes. Her fists clenched as she stood her ground, several feet of space separating them.

"Yes... surely... you knew this day would come." She said softly, her voice shaky. By all appearances she was holding it together, but the subtle tremble in her body betrayed the storm raging inside her. How could she go through with this? They had shared so much together.

Wasn't it... not that long ago? When life was so simple?

We shared such good times...

right?

Inseparable...

ready to conquer this hell of a world together...

remember?

Don't you remember?

And yet here we are.

What sort of....

twisted love story is this?

Her eyes lifted, meeting his once more and it was as though he could read her very thoughts. But then... he had always been good at reading her feelings. Had always been good at everything. Smiling at her with those warm brown eyes, being her strength when she needed him... and now... ironically, that same strength is where she would most likely meet her end.

"I hope you don't hate me baby girl... in spite of all that's happened between us I will always love you." He had finally spoken, after that long stretch of silence. His words so seductive, smooth, tugging at her heartstrings. They hit her with a force that made her take an unsteady step back, her eyes closed in attempts to hold back the tears, but they spilled out anyways.

"Shut up..." Her voice was so low that he couldn't possibly hear her. Her body was still trembling as she looked down at the ground, her body bowed as her grief seemed to physically weigh on her shoulders. As if she had faced defeat already.

And then, her eyes flew open and she looked up at him. They were filled with so much resentment and hatred, all former sentimentality seemed to have been burned away by her sudden rage.

"J U S T S H U T U P!"

She shouted, her cry cut the silence in the still night. Her fists clenched as tears streamed down her cheeks.

She couldn't afford to let the past take forefront place in her mind right now. She didn't have time to let her guard down again, she wouldn't.

Love can only get you so far. But at some point... when its all said and done... even love isn't invincible. It does not always win out, just like us... love can die too.

As she thought this in her mind she steeled herself, her chest still heaving from her outburst.

He didn't flinch, he didn't even seem startled, he just gazed at her with those haunting eyes before finally sighing. A sad sound as he closed them shut, perhaps to block out the sight of her.

"Very well then... I suppose those words wouldn't be much help right now... but don't let your hate and anger affect your ability to face me at full strength." He said softly. His words triggered a memory. Back to when they used to train together. He had taught her everything. Those training sessions... filled with lighthearted laughter and joy. They would spend days training hard and nights tangled in each others arms.

She said nothing as she wiped her eyes, eyebrows furrowed. It was taking everything inside her not to break down. Just like those training sessions it was just the two of them. No one else. Not a soul to intrude on their little bubble. Even now, it was no one else here. The moment was too intimate for comfort.

With a deep breath and a glance up at the night sky above them, she steeled her resolve. She raised a hand which was clenched into a fist and as she did so she looked at him and her silver eyes were devoid of emotion.

"Giovanni... you have committed ghastly and horrific crimes against innocent people. Such crimes far exceed those who have done wrong before you. These crimes are punishable by death and as the head of the Armen Justice Department... I condemn you to your fate. Resisting... is... f-futile, for even if... you manage t-to escape... we will continue to hunt you down... until justice is served and you have been put down." As she recited the words, her resolve cracked slightly, allowing emotion to shake her voice.

And just like that, she was stoic, her eyes empty once more. What she said hanging in the air between them.

"You know how I hate admitting defeat. I won't go out without a fight... but you already know that... don't you... Riyu?" He whispered, he had opened his eyes but wouldn't meet her gaze as he focused on the ground. He said her name like a caress, sounding it out slowly. She always loved how he said her name. Could it be killing him as well?

The silver eyed woman brought her hand down and in a smooth motion she drew two daggers from the sheaths strapped to her thighs and sank into a crouch, her feet apart, knees bent slightly, shoulder width apart. In the moonlight, her silver hair shown like steel, her matching eyes fierce and cold, all warmth gone as she regarded her former lover.

He was nothing but an enemy to her now. She would not allow past feelings get in the way of passing righteous judgement to those who hurt the innocent. How many families had he destroyed? How many lives ruined? He didn't deserve mercy or kindness. Did he give that to them when he killed them in cold blood? And to think, that she had shared so much with someone like him... it made her sick.

"I hope you're ready darling. I've been waiting and preparing for this day... when I would finally catch you and avenge those who's lives you took so callously." She breathed out before suddenly lunging towards him, eyes flashing.

He chuckled softly before bringing up his sword to block her strike as steel met steel with such force that a spark flew up from where her dagger met his sword, but she had a counter move waiting for him as she spun, her right hand swinging out like a cobra as the dagger came at him once more. He shoved forward with a grunt, attempting to throw off her aim, the blade of his sword sliding along the blade of her dagger as he did so. When she missed, the dagger swinging harmlessly by his shoulder, he used the momentum of her movements and his resistance to slam into her shoulder, effectively knocking her back before coming at her again with his blade, but she caught herself in time, her feet skidding against the ground, a whistle in the air as his blade sliced through a few strands of silver hair swinging by her chin as she narrowly avoided having her head cut from her body. She stumbled back but regained her footing, but he was already on her again like a hungry wolf, swinging his sword in graceful arcs towards her body, of which she was kept on her toes, dancing away to avoid the attacks.

He was driving her back across the moonlit field, towards the trees, where she knew that he would utilize them to his advantage. She didn't mind this either because they would offer her shield from his calculated strikes.

They danced across the field, each attack of his sword slicing away at her stamina and endurance as some of his strikes were met with defensive ones from her blades when she had no choice but to throw them up to avoid getting sliced into ribbons. His attacks had all of his strength behind them, and her arms were screaming with pain, sweat glistening off her smooth pale skin.

When she felt the press of the bark of a tree against her back, she threw herself out of the way a split second before the cut of his sword could carve into her abdomen, slicing into the trunk instead where she had been.

Her chest heaving, she darted back, further into the trees and she could feel him close behind her. With a smirk she ran straight towards the closest tree, a few feet up its trunk before kicking off, her body soaring above him. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion and for a brief moment all she saw was the vast night sky filled with so many stars above her, beckoning her to forget all her troubles and just lose herself within its endless depths. Perhaps deep down inside, she knew that she couldn't bring herself to do it.

Would you kill him if you had the chance?

She had been asked that question before and she had always responded with "yes of course" but never really gave it much thought.

Perhaps... that is why... she hesitated.

She didn't anticipate that he would be able to attack her from out of the air, but when she had kicked from the tree as he brought his sword towards her, she had thought that she would be able to flip over him and land behind him, before dealing a fatal blow from behind. However, in a split second the momentum from his attack would allow him to change direction, spinning him around before he would bring the sword up towards her, dealing her a blow from below.

In the end... it was that very same love that tore us apart. Wasn't it?

A scream pierced the air...
