An Early Look

The highly anticipated young adult novel Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark, set to be released on February 2, 2021, is part of a majorly hyped up publishing initiative that has been talked about a lot since its announcement. It is refreshing to see the Jedi and the Republic at a time when they are not about to be destroyed by the Sith right away. We get to see the galaxy as it was, during the golden age that many characters have referenced.

Well, it turns out that we're getting some of this book a little early. Star Wars.com revealed an exclusive excerpt of the first High Republic young adult novel, showing the characters of Orla Jareni, Cohmac Vitus, Reath Silas, and Dez Rydan about to undertake a new mission. As they meet the ship and crew, they find out that they are not what the group is expecting. Here is a snippet of what the site shared:

"Leox cackled as he began leading them from the cockpit into the ship. 'Yeah, you just wait. But I don’t want to give you fellas the wrong idea. Geode’s a wild man, for sure, but when it comes to steering the ship, he’s all business.'

'Solid, you might say.' Orla raised an eyebrow. 'Very well. Let’s get a look at our bunks.'

'Well, we sort of have to create your bunks before you can see them,' Affie admitted. 'Might as well get started.'

Great, Reath thought as he turned to follow the others. Not only am I headed to the back end of the galaxy, but the job of getting us through hyperspace belongs to a rock.

Sometimes the Force had a sense of humor."

Just the little bit that we are getting showcases that both the readers and the characters are in for a wild ride, and we will get to know this colorful cast as the books go on. It appears that everything will, at least to start with, be a little lighter in tone, a far cry from the dark, sullen tone that has been seen in some of the films, such as Revenge of the Sith. While there will undoubtedly be dark, dramatic moments as befitting Star Wars, hopefully the authors realized that some of us are kind of tired of the dark Star Wars. It is another reason why The Mandalorian is so beloved: it went back to the fun tone of the original films.

Also, it is nice that we are getting away from the saga of the Skywalkers. As much as we all love Luke (especially when we finally got to see Beast Mode from him in the season two finale of The Mandalorian), it is good to see that the galaxy is actually...well, a galaxy. It's made up of more than five or six planets that the protagonists bounce between. Having people have an adventure in other parts of the galaxy will be really neat and flesh out the vast universe.

The first young adult book in this series, Into the Dark, is set to be released on February 2, 2021. Other upcoming The High Republic novels include The Rising Storm and Out of the Shadows, set for release on July 6 and July 27, 2021, respectively. The first novels, Light of the Jedi and A Test of Courage, were released on January 5, 2021. If the books are the hit that Disney is no doubt hoping that they'll be, then we could see more. In fact, we could get enough of them to rival some of the series of Star Wars media shoved into the Legends timeline. If the book series is a success, then we might see the canon start to build up again, and maybe some stuff that was put into Legends will end up making a story that Disney wants to be in canon again. The fans certainly wouldn't mind.

In any case, we'll have to see what more The High Republic novels may bring us, and if they can really culminate in something big.
