Breaking Down 'The Mandalorian' Season 2 Trailer

Of all of the recent Star Wars properties created after the Disney acquisition, arguably none of them have been as hyped and well received as The Mandalorian. With its western feel, great characters, engaging story, and yes, Baby Yoda, it has been the one thing that has united all of the fans in their love for something Star Wars. With the success of the first season, a second season was inevitable, especially given the cliffhanger ending we got at the end of the first season with the appearance of Moff Gideon and the Darksaber.

There had not been a ton of details about the next season, but fans grabbed onto every scrap of information. Then we finally got the first trailer, and like any good trailer, it left us with a lot of questions while leaving us enough tantalizing information that we cannot help but hop in front of our televisions when the next episode comes out.

One of the striking things about the trailer is the wide array of locations. In the 90-second trailer, we get to see Tatooine, an ice planet, a seedy underbelly type town, and a dock that leads Din and Baby Yoda onto a ship that goes out to sea. The ocean is a bit of a rare setting in a Star Wars film, so the idea that we might get a significant portion of an episode on a new location is exciting.

From what we can glean, the main plot of season two is Din Djarin trying to either deliver or reunite Baby Yoda to or with whatever Jedi he can find. There are endless possibilities for what the Jedi will be like if/when Din finds them. As always, it is clear that the remnants of the Empire are not giving up in their chase of Baby Yoda. It is still unclear what exactly they want The Child for, so it is possible that we might get more information from Moff Gideon, played by Giancarlo Esposito, who is best known for playing the evil drug lord Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad. He was not in the trailer, even though we saw more instances of the unique TIE fighter that he flew in the finale of season one.

While it is not hard to see Moff Gideon as the primary antagonist, the trailer also showed a mysterious cloaked figure confirmed to be played by professional wrestler Sasha Banks. We can only speculate on what her role in the story is. Is she friend or foe? Is she working for the Jedi or Gideon? Either way, she clearly knows who Din Djarin and Baby Yoda are, and has taken an interest in them. Smart money is on her playing a major role in the season.

Another notable aspect of the trailer is what it did not show. There has been a lot of talk about the appearances of popular characters such as Asoka Tano from the popular The Clone Wars animated series, as well as the most famous Mandalorian armor-wearing character in all of Star Wars, Boba Fett. This is likely a positive for the show in general. A good trailer should only whet our appetites for what is to come, not play all of the show's best cards before we even get the whole picture. It is likely that Disney is saving the best for the show itself.

Overall, it appears that there will be a lot of similarities from the first season, but not enough as to appear repetitive. It is clear that Din Djarin will continue to do everything in his power to keep The Child safe, and their galaxy-spanning adventures are sure to enthrall. We even get a glimpse of some of the show's sense of humor, showcasing that it is not going to be all doom and gloom. Whatever the case, fans of all types are counting down the days until October 30, eager to see more of the most beloved piece of Star Wars media since arguably the original trilogy.
