Observing Worlds in a New Light

Our universe

In our world, it is perceived that we exist within the third dimension. Or at least this is the most common conception, so I will be using it in my little “theory.” I use the word "theory" lightly because I cannot stress this enough: I am not a theoretical physicist or a mathematician, I just have a pretty good grasp on most upper level physics and math. I’m really just a guy that thinks a lot.

So, in this world, we see three dimensions. We see x, y, and z. We see width, height, and depth. That is what the universe that we perceive is boiled down to. Yes, we are able to observe time, but we can only observe a representation of time in relation to the three dimensions that we can observe. Also, while we are able to manipulate the three dimensions that we live in, we are not able to manipulate time. We are simply able to observe.

In order to perceive what the fourth dimension is, we must first come up with a description of all dimensions before it:

• The first dimension can be seen as a line. This is a linear representation of an infinite composition of points.

• The second dimension can be seen as a plane. This is a linear representation of an infinite composition of lines.

• The third dimension can be seen as an object. This is a linear representation of an infinite composition of planes.

Looking at these representations, we have to come to certain conclusions. These conclusions are necessary in order to comprehend how the fourth dimension could work. They include:

• No dimension can physically perceive the dimension above it. This being said, we will never be able to perceive the next dimension.

• Each line is a universe of points. Each plane is a universe of lines, and each object is a universe of lines.

• Our universe is one object, as portrayed in the description of the third dimension.

Now, using these conclusions, we can begin to construct an understanding of the fourth dimension. First, we have to start with a basic description of it, following the progression of descriptions outlined above. The logical conclusion for a description for the fourth dimension would be:

• The fourth dimension can be seen as an eternity. This is a linear representation of an infinite composition of objects.

One of the most important words in this description is linear. Using the word linear allows us to make a very needed assumption. This assumption is that, since it is a linear representation, it is an infinite line of the same object, just at different points in time. The fourth dimension is what we know as time.

Now I am going to share some ways that I can logically represent the fourth dimension in my head. One way that I can represent it to myself is scaling it on graph. If each dimension is just part of a logical progression, you can represent each progression by a previous progression. The easiest way to do this is looking at the first dimension.

On a graph, we can see a line (a one-dimensional universe) as a distance. For example, we can have a line that goes from zero to ten on the x-axis. Although we in the dimension above it can observe the line as a finite distance, the points in the dimension below it observe the line as infinite. That is, there is an infinite number of points in that line. It is the same in the fourth dimension. We observe our eternity as infinite, but in the fifth dimension, they would observe that eternity as a line. In this analogy, our existence is a point along the line of eternity.

Another way that we can think about it is through space. So, just as we can walk through our dimension with a step and we move a certain amount of distance, this happens in the fourth dimension. Every step you take forward you would move a certain amount of time forward.

I realize that my explanation is kind of just a word vomit from my mind, but is how I represent it in my mind. The biggest reason for not being able to create a coherent representation of the fourth dimension is because we, as third dimensional beings, cannot comprehend how the fourth dimension functions. We can theorize about certain parts of it, but none of these theories can ever be proven true.

In the next article, we will be going over how continuing this logical progression can help us understand the possibility of not only multiple universes, but infinite universes.
