Bo-Katan Will Make Appearance In 'The Mandalorian' Season 3

The Mandalorian Season 2 set out to expand the scope of the show and Din Djarin's world view, or should we say, "galactic view." This was accomplished by introducing him to numerous characters from critical points in the Star Wars timeline, including Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and, perhaps most importantly for Din's character, Bo-Katan Kryze. Portrayed in animation and live-action by Katee Sackhoff, the character of Bo-Katan potentially heralds a deep dive into the world of the Mandalorians. With recent teases that Sackhoff is gearing up to once again portray the fiery Mandalorian warrior, Season 3 of The Mandalorian could herald a visit to Mandalore for the first time in live action.

Disney's crackdown of leaks and plot announcements, which started in the MCU, has rapidly expanded into the Star Wars universe. Little to no details of the movies or Disney+ shows, live-action or animated, make their way onto the internet before the official release. Besides the occasional aerial drone picture or leaked photo of Ewan McGregor walking to set, often the best place to look for clues about a new project is the actors' social media. Recently on Instagram, Katee Sackhoff posted about taking COVID precautions in the midst of working on a new project, posting in part:

"I'm on my way to go get my COVID test 'cause she's goin' back to work. Whaaat? What could it be on?"

While The Book of Boba Fett wrapped production a few months ago, there has been little word as to the status of the third season of The Mandalorian amidst filming of the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. While a cameo in other projects is certainly on the table for an intergalactic player like Bo-Katan, it is hard to believe that she would post in such excitement if she were the "cameo of the week" on a different show. More than likely she will be taking a central role in the upcoming season of The Mandalorian, which is allegedly slated for a Spring 2022 release.

Bo-Katan Kryze has a long and somewhat checkered past in the Star Wars universe. She first appeared in The Clone Wars as a member of Death Watch at odds with Ahsoka Tano and her Separatist friend, Lux Bonteri. Her platoon of Mandalorian warriors went on to commit multiple war crimes in their campaign against the Duchess Satine including targeting civilians and killing hostages. With the help of the rogue Sith Lord, Maul, the Death Watch successfully usurped the Duchesses rule in Sundari. However, when Maul seized power for himself, Bo realized her mistake and fled underground with several of her comrades-in-arms. This includes freeing longtime adversary of Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi, from Mandalorian custody and recruiting Jedi outcast Ahsoka Tano to her cause. With Tano's help, Maul was defeated resulting in an all-too brief victory for the Mandalorian resistance.

After a long and on-going battle with the Empire, we encounter Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian securing weapons for her ongoing struggle to free her homeworld. The situation on Mandalore is left somewhat ambiguous after it was last seen in Rebels. Clan Wren was able to free the patriarch of the family, who was a political prisoner of the Empire, and simultaneously positioned Bo-Katan to become leader of the Mandalorian resistance. Claiming the Dark Saber in the name of her people, Kryze seemingly set Mandalore on a path to freedom.

However, the saber was reclaimed from Moff Gideon by Din Djarin at the end of Season 2, and Boba Fett made a reference to how the Imperial Navy "turned (Mandalore) to glass." Could the planet have been victim to a full scale orbital bombardment? How did Bo-Katan lose the saber to Moff Gideon? It is likely that with Grogu undertaking Jedi training under Master Skywalker and with many questions in the air concerning Mandalore and its people, Din Djarin might just take Bo-Katan up on her offer and assist her in the liberation of the planet. With Darksaber in hand, rightfully won in combat, Djarin would be a rallying point for the Mandalorian people. This could also paint a very tempting target on his back for Kryze, if she were to give in to her lust for power.
