Bo-Katan Actress Sparks Hope For Future Appearances In 'Star Wars'

The character of Bo-Katan Kryze has come a long way since her debut on the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. After a return on Rebels and then the final season of the former, she made her live-action debut on The Mandalorian season 2, portrayed by none other than Katee Sackhoff, the very person who voiced her in the animated content. The transition between media was met with high praise, with fans applauding the seamless translation; the animated and live-action depictions felt like one and the same.

The season ended with the question of whether or not Bo-Katan would accept the Darksaber despite Din Djarin having defeated its prior wielder Moff Gideon in combat. Since the Darksaber needs to be won in combat, this has fueled speculation that Bo-Katan may become an antagonist to Din in season 3. Recently, Sackhoff was interviewed by Looper, and she was asked about the future of her character.

"I honestly wish that I could tell you that I knew something. I really don't know. I know where we ended and that's all that I have. I can only use my imagination and hope that we see some pretty cool stuff, but I have no idea."

While the actress says that she does not know of further plans for the character at the moment, she does have ideas of where she would like the character to go, which are sure to spark the imaginations of many Star Wars fans.

"It's hard to say because she started in a place that was... she wasn't necessarily on the right side of things. She thought she was. I think she's always had her people in mind. But her growth to get to where she's at has been quite dramatic. When you are the second born and your sister is ruling, you never dream that you're going to have to take this job. Because the idea that she would no longer be with us is unthinkable. And then that happens."

The revelation of Duchess Satine being Bo-Katan Kryze's sister was a significant moment in The Clone Wars. However, that relationship has not been explored very much since then. It can be inferred that some of Bo-Katan's actions since then are with her deceased sister in mind, but it would be nice to have a bit more explicit acknowledgement of that. Bo-Katan lives a life seeing her older sister as the one destined to be a ruler, and then Bo-Katan finds herself in that role later in life, after her sister's passing.

"So how do you take a person who is trained as a warrior, who never thought that they would have to lead nor wanted to lead, and get them to a place where they have to lead because it's for the people? And I find that to be so interesting, because I think that she is a warrior at heart. That's who she is. That's who she's always been, and we haven't seen that part of her yet."

Some believe that the Darksaber has to be won in battle, but it ends up in Bo-Katan's hands due to Sabine Wren taking it from Maul's lair and then giving it to her. In The Mandalorian, Bo-Katan seems hesitant to accept the Darksaber from Din Djarin. Despite this, Sackhoff's words seem to paint that Bo-Katan still thinks she is the rightful ruler.

"I want to see why she thinks she's the right ruler, and how far she'll go, and what that looks like. Just because you think you're right and just because you think you're the right person to rule, that doesn't mean you actually are. So I want to see that struggle because if she really does care about her people, she may not be the right person."

This touches upon some nuance that can be used to explore the character even further. Just because Bo-Katan believes herself to be right does not mean that she is always going to do the right thing, whatever that may be. Sackhoff seems to have an idea of where she'd like the character to go. We will just have to see whether these ideas unfold in The Mandalorian season 3 and hopefully beyond.
