Great Scott! Star Wars fans were scooped with a major announcement about The Mandalorian at the start of this weekend. Veteran actor Christopher Lloyd, best immortalized as Doctor Emmett "Doc" Brown from the 1980's Back to the Future franchise, has been cast in an unknown role in the upcoming third season of the hit Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian. Lloyd is no stranger to science fiction and fantasy, having had a major role as Klingon Commander Kruge in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). Lucasfilm, which had a tradition of casting relative unknowns in its movies and series, has been bringing in more big-name stars in recent years, such as Carl Weathers (The Mandalorian), Woody Harrelson (Solo: A Star Wars Story), and Michael Biehn (The Mandalorian). The news of Christopher's Lloyd guest-starring in the upcoming season is perhaps the most exciting development of them all.

To say this development is anything other than exciting is a massive understatement. Lloyd has starred in so many movies that I enjoyed as a child, including the aforementioned Back to the Future and Star Trek franchises. He had played comedic characters like Professor Plum in Clue, Fester Adams in the two Addams Family movies in the early 1990s, and even some other villainous roles such as Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? The obvious question now is, who will he be portraying in The Mandalorian? Obviously, we will not be given much information, if anything, until closer to the official premiere of season three of The Mandalorian. Of course, we are all Star Wars fans here and we are good at speculating endlessly until we know for sure.

As we do not know too much about what might transpire in season three of The Mandalorian, there are virtually endless opportunities for Lloyd's possible role. From his appearance in The Book of Boba Fett, we do know that Din is struggling to master the use of the Darksaber, which he had won during a duel with Moff Gideon at the conclusion of Season Two. We also learned that Din has been excommunicated from his covert after revealing that he removed his helmet during the events of Season Two. The only way to atone for his actions would be for him to go to a location on their homeworld of Mandalore, which had been devastated by the Empire several years earlier. Din has also acquired a new mode of transportation, a modified Naboo starfighter. Grogu also returns to his care after having spent some time learning the ways of the Force from Luke.

Based on that information, where could Lloyd come in? Could he be an older Mandalorian who might have information that Din would need in order to reach Mandalore and/or the place he needs to go to redeem himself? Could he be someone who can help Din learn to properly wield the Darksaber? Will he be wearing a mask or prosthetics to portray an alien creature? Will he be bringing a canon or Legends character to life on screen?

I have overheard some speculation that Christopher Lloyd might be appearing as a dark horse character like Joruus C'baoth, a Jedi character featured in Timothy Zahn’s Legends The Thrawn Trilogy, and Outbound Flight. Joruus was a mad clone of the late Jedi Master Jorus C’baoth who had disappeared into the Unknown Regions. He joined Grand Admiral Thrawn in his quest to overthrow the New Republic. However, the mad dark Jedi had his own agenda to corrupt Luke and gain control of Leia’s newborn children, Jaina and Jacen Solo. Since Thrawn had returned to canon with Star Wars Rebels, a new series of Thrawn books, and the upcoming Ahsoka live-action series, it would not be too far-fetched to also see C’baoth’s integration into the current canon. Furthermore, Lloyd is a very versatile actor and has the dynamic range necessary to pull the role off.

Whatever role Lloyd ultimately plays in The Mandalorian, he will give a memorable performance. I am very excited to see him join the Star Wars franchise. This news is truly a surprise to be sure, but a very pleasant one. Welcome to the galaxy far, far away, Mr. Lloyd, and may the Force be with you!
