Asteroid Strike

2056: The world has come together. United. For once. Russia, China and USA. Their space force side by side.There is an eerie silence across the globe. Every nation has a hotline with each other. Scopes facing space are tracking the moment of an impending asteroid strike.

They have tracked an asteroid, half a mile wide, estimated to strike Earth’s atmosphere in 2056. The asteroid Machete had left the Mars - Jupiter belt, the habitat of nearly 7.5 lac asteroids with Earth annihilating size. It was now in the space zone directly aimed at an Earth strike. No doubt about that. No doubt at all.

The journalist is screaming over the din.

“Why is an asteroid strike an emergency? Why wasn’t it tracked earlier?”

The last time an asteroid had pummeled us, the dinos' had become extinct.

Just out of college Paula, could not hold back either - “What counter measures are the USA, Russia and China taking. Is there a joint space effort?”

The answer from the podium was grim. “We need a quick reaction time. Machete changed course midway. And we are investigating the possibility of alien intervention.”

There were loud murmurs, a deep hush and more screaming questions.

Back to Now: In 2016 the DEEP-IN project got Lubin an award.

The DEEP-IN project concept:

A sail equipped spacecraft is propelled by photons released from a photonic laser thruster. The laser thruster generates amplified photons that hit the sail of space craft. Photons have stored energy which transition to push when they hit the sail. And achieve upto 25% of the speed of light.

2056: Earth orbit interplanetary and interstellar travel platform propelled the spacecraft at 15% the speed of light. The laser tipped spacecraft reached Machete just beyond Mars. The laser beam sprayed across Machete and decimated it into pieces that were ripped across space and disappeared into the deep darkness.

There were cheers across the globe and for a brief period in time there were no enemies on Earth. There was joy as the Lubin spacecraft having done its job fast sped away and vanished into the ether regions of space.

Sci-fi no longer. We can take care of asteroid strikes.

The Lubin DEEP – IN conceptualizes that it would take 3 days for a sail spacecraft to reach Mars. Photonic propulsion using laser could propel spacecraft at a proportion of the fastest speed known to man – the speed of light.

Expand your horizons and touch the edge of your imagination. That too will fall short of what this coming tech morph means. What actually is in store for us is a reality that will again change and make this current time seem like the age of cave men.

When I am stuck I always look into space. At the immense vastness of the space around us. The same possibilities lie within us. Each of us possess our own mini cosmos. With the similar energy and power to manifest.

There are 100 billion suns in the universe. A supernova is 10 billion times brighter than the sun.

Gravitational waves are proof of Einstein's theory regarding space and time.

Detectable gravitational waves allow measurements of faraway stars, galaxies and black holes based on the waves they make. Indirectly, it also adds to the evidence that black holes (never directly observed) do actually exist.

The primordial gravitational waves which emanated at the start of the universe are not yet found. They would add credence to the concept that the infant universe had an exponential expansion.

Primordial waves are may be still be resonating feebly. Their detection could let us know the energy of the exponential expansion of the universe and possibly allow us to take a sneak peek at the Big Bang.
