Artificial Intelligence and Islam: What Is the Relationship?

writer: said idrees sadat

In today’s fast-changing world, technology is becoming a central part of our lives. One of the most powerful tools today is Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is used in phones, hospitals, education, and even in daily communication. But an important question for Muslims is: how does AI relate to Islam? Is it helpful, harmful, or something in between?

First, it is important to understand that Islam does not reject knowledge or technology. In fact, Islam encourages learning and discovery. The first revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was “Read.” This shows that gaining knowledge is a key part of the religion. From this perspective, AI can be seen as a tool created by human intelligence, which itself is a gift from Allah.

AI can be very useful in supporting Islamic life. For example, many apps today help Muslims know prayer times, find the Qibla direction, or read and listen to the Qur'an. AI can also help people learn Arabic, understand meanings of verses, and access Islamic lectures easily. In the past, people had to travel long distances to learn from scholars, but now knowledge is available in seconds. This is a great benefit.

However, Islam also teaches that not everything that is possible should be accepted without thinking. Ethics are very important. AI systems are created by humans, and they can make mistakes. Sometimes they give wrong information or show bias. When it comes to religion, even a small mistake can mislead people. That is why Muslims should not fully depend on AI for important religious rulings (fatwas). Scholars with deep knowledge and understanding are still necessary.

Another concern is the issue of truth and honesty. AI can create fake images, voices, and videos. This can spread lies or confusion. In Islam, honesty is a core value. Spreading false information is considered a sin. So Muslims must be careful when using AI tools, especially on social media. They should always check if something is real before sharing it.

There is also a deeper question: can AI understand religion like a human? The answer is no. AI can process information, but it does not have faith, emotions, or spiritual understanding. Islam is not only about knowledge, but also about belief (iman), intention (niyyah), and connection with Allah. These are things that a machine cannot have. So while AI can help in learning, it cannot replace human faith or spiritual experience.

At the same time, Muslims can use AI in a positive way. It can be used to spread good messages, teach Islamic values, and connect people with beneficial knowledge. Content creators, teachers, and writers can use AI to improve their work and reach more people. The key is to use it responsibly and with good intention.

In conclusion, AI and Islam are not in conflict. AI is a tool, and like any tool, it depends on how people use it. Islam provides guidance on ethics, truth, and responsibility. If Muslims follow these principles, they can benefit from AI while protecting their faith. The future will likely bring even more advanced technology, so it is important to stay aware, think carefully, and always keep Islamic values at the center of our actions.

Muslims should remember that technology is not the goal, but a means to achieve something better. If AI helps people become more knowledgeable, more honest, and closer to Allah, then it is a blessing. But if it leads to distraction, misinformation, or weak faith, then it becomes harmful.

In the future, Islamic scholars may also study AI more deeply and give clear guidance about its use. This will help Muslims use modern tools while staying connected to their religious values.

Finally, balance is very important. Islam teaches moderation in all parts of life. Using AI with wisdom, responsibility, and strong faith can help Muslims live better in the modern world without losing their identity.
