Apparently We Might Be Getting A Gina Carano Spin-off Project?

Would You Watch?

Might as well, right?

With over forty years of Star Wars media continually coming out, pretty much every character got their own backstory and explanation that would make Tolkien tell them to tone it back a bit. Everyone from the stormtrooper that Leia shot in the beginning of A New Hope to, and I couldn't make this up if I tried, the garbage monster that grabs Luke in the Death Star. Her name was Omi, and she grabbed Luke and dunked him to "baptize" him for some Force belief or whatever. Again, couldn't make this up if I tried, but somebody could, so here we are.

Now that Disney has made the vast majority of Star Wars media non-canon, they have the opportunity to go in more directions with their new characters now that they aren't constrained by previous lore. With the most popular bit of Star Wars media, The Mandalorian, currently in progress, it makes some measure of sense that Disney would want to give us more of the characters we love. Characters have always been a strong suit for The Mandalorian, and Cara Dune is no exception. Played by Gina Carano, her tough attitude and general awesomeness have made her one a fan favorite character. As a result, we might be getting more of her than sporadic appearances.

On December 10th, Disney is reportedly announcing its upcoming slate of projects to investors, one of which could be a Cara Dune spin-off. We're already highly anticipating the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries, and there is also an untitled project from popular director Taika Waititi, who directed the season one finale of The Mandalorian and won an Oscar for penning the WWII dramedy Jojo Rabbit.

There is speculation that the new announcements will include a Cara Dune spin-off show. The character Bo-Katan, a female Mandalorian leader, would be a star in the series as well, making this the first female-centered screen series from Star Wars, though Emmy-nominated writer Leslye Headland has also been tied to a female-centered Star Wars project. If both of them do come to pass, it could bring in a new frontier for Star Wars stories.

However, there could be complications with a Cara Dune show. While the character is highly popular, Gina Carano is not. Some of her remarks on platforms like Twitter (such as mocking Democrats for wearing masks and putting "beep bop boop" as her pronouns on Twitter) have led to calls for her firing from The Mandalorian. While that's highly unlikely, Disney might see the backlash as too much of a risk and cancel whatever show they're thinking of. All things considered, this is highly unlikely. A Twitter hashtag generally doesn't have the power to sway the most powerful entertainment studio on Earth.

Everything regarding the show is still rumors at this point. The December 10th announcements could come and go with no mention of Cara Dune anywhere. If there was something announced, it would likely be a miniseries like the Obi-Wan show. Disney isn't going to give one of the most popular Star Wars characters of all time a short series, but rather order a multi-season show for a popular character that isn't exactly a starring character. Everything regarding the show other than the idea that it might exist is purely speculative. Even if it is announced, that will likely be the only concrete information we get for a while. Things like shooting schedules and release dates are highly tentative with the COVID-19 pandemic shaking everything up. At this point, we'll just have to wait and see.

Or they might announce a multi-season show about the swamp monster that tried to eat R2-D2 on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back.
