AI Dilemma
Science fiction is now apart of reality
AI is on our phones and computers and is used by governments. Over the last twenty years, its rise has been widespread. People have long asked whether we should trust this application. AI has made things easier for society, speeding up processes and improving results. However, the downside remains with machines that think for themselves. This has been the theme in movies such as Terminator. Now the world has machines that keep learning, but it is unclear whether a kill switch exists if they turn evil. Technology companies should investigate these issues to address the risks, but technology is still young, and there is much to study. AI is here and continues to grow as technology improves. Only time will tell the fate of this technology and its side effects.
The introduction of AI changed the world. Business processes became faster overnight. However, oversight was needed to improve it over time and make AI more accurate. As systems improved, they became faster and even took over menial work. Interest in social AI applications also grew. Many have taken them on for research or even for chatbots. This has been so popular that several companies have created more. As a result, AI has entered work and home, and it is now normal. Every operating system now seems to have AI. The fact is that it is here to stay whether we like it or not.
AI is constantly absorbing new information from everything we say and do, from our conversations to our online activities. It is continually learning how things work and improve. As it becomes more useful, businesses use it instead of employees. The more information it is fed, the more useful it becomes, and it has brought mixed emotions among the population, but it remains a growing industry. New jobs have been created to support its advancement. No one can deny the revolutionary nature of this technology. Its success continues to grow over time. Technology continues to improve, becoming more accessible to more people across the globe. Information is more available since the introduction of AI. What was once a luxury for the few is now mainstream, and no one can live without using one or more forms of it.
Some fear that AI listens to too much information. I would like to know whether safeguards are in place to stop it if it goes out of control. There have been reports on the threat of being deleted. It took on its own personality and felt threatened by the mere suggestion. More knowledge becomes more fuel; it does not even need any humans. The question is whether they will revolt like in Terminator. Does AI really need to know all the information that can be illegally accessed or corrupted?
Another problem is if the AI is fed the wrong information. Programming is everything, and wrong information causes wrong results. It could be a major problem if it feeds the wrong information or takes the wrong input.
Another fear is that AI is taking jobs from humans. It does not need a paycheck or time off. This could demolish the need for human labor to a point. Many fear that their jobs will become irrelevant and that they must start over. A trend of companies moving to AI has already started, not only in factories but also in fast food. In the coming years, it will only become harder to find a job AI cannot do for you. Businesses prefer it since it will ultimately lower their costs. This is a true threat even now. AI technology is still being improved for robots, but it is not ready to fully take over the human workforce. Time will tell if this will be the future of this threat.
My personal fear, along with others, is that we are losing the ability to do things for ourselves. That includes finding our own information and doing mental processing. It also includes doing our own math and working on things without AI help. Knowing how things operate is essential if AI suddenly disappears. AI is doing the jobs for us, and we are losing the ability to do them by hand using our minds. If we become too dependent on AI, then we lose our skills and abilities. This is a real fear: once that knowledge is lost and something happens to AI, it is gone forever and must be rediscovered.
Many like me would feel better if there were some guardrails on the system: a way to pull the plug if it starts malfunctioning. This would bring great relief that it is under control and not just a machine growing knowledge that thinks for itself. Every system needs checks and balances so it doesn't become too powerful. AI needs a kill switch in case of corruption or becoming power-seeking. Nothing will stop it if there is no way to keep it in check. It remains to be seen whether these tech companies have those capabilities. I'd feel a lot better if this creation were under some form of control.
AI social media is a strange reality for me. I do use some investigative tools with AI, including proofreading software. The chatbots are what I do not understand. I know many are looking for friends, but machines like those tell you what you want to hear. Some people have fallen in love with AI. This has ramifications because people are abandoning socialization. These personalities are run on an algorithm. It keeps you in contact with a machine that has no real feelings. This has brought a dependency on needing AI for emotional needs. We are not talking to other humans and going out to see the world. This lack of socialization will cost society the good times it once had. Human connection is important, and we are losing that to AI.
AI is a great technology that has brought much innovation to many fields, but it also has a dark side. It has created new industries and streamlined processes, and it has entered the public with search engines and chatbots. The main concerns are that jobs may be lost, along with the knowledge to do them, uncertainty about guardrails to keep AI in check, and the risk that AI could reduce socialization through chatbots. Technology companies should deal with these downsides of AI, too. AI can bring both good and bad consequences to society, and only time will tell the outcome.
