Adria Arjona To Star Opposite Diego Luna In 'Rogue One' Spinoff Series On Disney+

It is coming together

When Disney and Lucasfilm released Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December 2016, it was a huge it. Lots of viewers felt that the making of this direct prequel to the original Star Wars film was justified and worked well despite not being part of the Skywalker saga proper. Naturally, with all of the positive reception, a TV series acting as a prequel to Rogue One was greenlit for Disney+. First announced as a Cassian Andor series with Diego Luna back in the role, it has since been confirmed that K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) will be part of the show, and we can be sure to see much of the Rebel Alliance in the time leading up to Rogue One and the original trilogy.

As far as more cast news goes, it appears that we may have a new tidbit thanks to Deadline, who are reporting that Adria Arjona will be starring opposite Diego Luna. As far as her recent work goes, she has starred as Anathema Device in the Amazon and BBC miniseries Good Omens, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. The cast also includes Denise Gough, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgard, and Kyle Soller. Tony Gilroy, who worked on the screenplay for Rogue One and directed the reshoots of that film, is set to write the series pilot and direct some of the episodes.

While there have not been a lot of details revealed about the show, it has been described as a “spy thriller,” which makes sense given the shady nature of Andor’s work for the Rebel Alliance in Rogue One. One might expect to see the darker, less clean side of the Rebel Alliance that we are so used to seeing onscreen. Of course, this is mere speculation, but one that can be taken from what we have seen before. Rogue One showed that there were characters who did morally questionable things in the name of furthering the cause of the Rebel Alliance. It felt very realistic, and very human, adding more layers to the whole conflict against the Galactic Empire.

With Imperial security droid K-2SO in the mix, one might wonder whether we may see an onscreen depiction of Andor’s meeting with the droid. This has been covered in a one-shot comic called Cassian & K-2SO #1. While it is theoretically possible that the show may either adapt this or do its own interpretation, it is also possible that it may skip past this meeting point so that there is no clash in canonicity, which has been a sticking point to some of the fans. Either way, K-2SO may provide some comic relief on a show that has potential to be very bleak and dreary.

Many Star Wars fans are all in as far as the Disney+ hype is concerned. The Mandalorian premiered on the streaming service’s launch date last November and gained near-universal praise. Given the success of the first season, there is a lot of excitement for the second season, which is set to premiere in October. There is also a Disney+ series about Obi-Wan Kenobi in the works, which would find Ewan McGregor returning to the role in a story set several years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. The Cassian Andor series would come out sometime after that show. On top of the live-action stuff, we also have the animated series The Bad Batch, a spin-off of The Clone Wars, coming in 2021. With all of these projects in the works, things seem to be shaping up nicely for Star Wars stories on the small screen.
