A Marvel/Star Wars Crossover In Marvel's 'What If...?'

The possibilities!

Star Wars and Marvel are two of the biggest franchises in the twenty-first century pop culture ethos at the moment. Star Wars' 40-year legacy combined with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's ongoing track record since 2008 resulted in their own diverse characters, lore, and history. Not only are they giants of pop culture, but both are now owned by the same Disney Corporation. Legally if Disney wanted to combine Marvel and Star Wars together, nothing could stop them. What would be the proper avenue for a Star Wars and Marvel crossover? Well, what if that answer is literally What If...?

Marvel’s What If…? is a new series coming to Disney +, which will be about various stories that all revolve around "What if" scenarios. What if Peggy Carter had gotten the super soldier serum? What if Spider-Man was the Sorcerer Supreme? These are various ideas about alternate visions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the idea of "What if Marvel met Star Wars?" could be on the cards for this series. During an interview with Collider, one of the directors, Bryan Andrews, has expressed interest in doing a crossover with Star Wars in the What If…? series. Although it appeared to be just a simple discussion on the various possibilities this series could take and the directions it could go.

Many would raise an eyebrow if Marvel and Star Wars were to meet in a more official stance. Imagine an Avengers film taking place in the galaxy far, far away, or a series where Darth Vader fought Thanos in the end. If a series is based on the idea that there are infinite possibilities and canon is not important, then why not have a crossover between these two titans of pop culture. It would make perfect sense thematically, and more importantly, financially. Hungry fans who have been yearning for this fusion are willing to give Disney plenty of money to see it happen. It would be a fun story sandbox to play in where creators do not have to worry about canon and just tell an interesting story without fear of any sort of backlash or repercussion. Sometimes the freedom to go wild without rigid constraints can lead to magnificent storytelling if done right.

How would a Star Wars-Marvel crossover look? Willl Marvel characters be going to Coruscant? Will Star Wars characters be going to Earth? The possibilities are endless. Two lawful good boy scouts like Luke Skywalker and Steve Rogers could be working together. Emperor Palpatine could wield the Dark Side of the Force against Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet. It would be an endless series of imaginative fun and speculation. Of course, at the end of the day, this is still up in the air.

For years, fans have always wanted to see various characters meet each other even when it made little sense to. As fans discuss theories, possibilities, and speculation, their imagination and creativity grew from it. Hence why there are a lot of fan fiction crossovers. Of course, the idea of actually seeing it with the same actors on screen could make for a fantastic viewing if done right.

Obviously none of these crossovers would or should be canon. It should be a fun side story. Although one need to be careful so as not to get hung up about canon status as this tends to get overblown out of proportion. A good story is a good story. If that means you have Luke Skywalker as an Avenger, then it should be about how it is presented rather than how it will actually fits into a larger timeline. That is the beautiful nature of storytelling.
