7 Things You Did Not Know About Dathomir

A Mysterious World

There are many incredible and beautiful planets within the Star Wars universe. Planets like the beautiful and elegant Naboo, the ice world of Hoth, and sandy Tatooine. But one of the most terrifying-looking and mysterious planet happens to be the dark world of Dathomir. Here are seven things you didn’t know about Maul’s homeworld, Dathomir:

1 - The Zabraks

The Zabraks are a humanoid species that can be found on Dathomir. Members of this species are known to have small horns on their heads and dark spots on their bodies. Famous Zabraks include Maul and Savage Oppress. The Zabraks can also be found on the planet Iridonia, where they look less terrifying than the ones from Dathomir.

2 - The Females

As seen in The Clone Wars, the female Dathomirians lack the horns of the males. They come from a clan of witches known as The Nightsisters. These witches don’t carry much of the same features of the male Zabraks, and seem to be the ones in control of the males.

3 - Mysterious Planet

Dathomir is on of the most mysterious planets within the galaxy, not only because of how it looks, but also because only a small percent of the planet has been explored. The habitant species of the planet ONLY live in a small part of the coast, in one of the three main continents. Although the planet is habitable, there is no explanation why all life can only be found in one side of the planet.

4 - The Nightsisters

As mentioned before, the Nightsisters are the dominant females of Dathomir, and they are some of the most powerful witches in the galaxy. The witches' magic is so powerful, Palpatine is afraid of them and orders them to be destroyed. The Nightsisters' magic comes from the dark side of the force. It even gives them the ability to create life.

5 - The Ruins

When the Republic became the Empire, many people believed that Dathomir was purged for the greater good of the galaxy. In Jedi: Fallen Order, we learned that Dathomir is nothing but ruins now, and that the Nightsisters are almost extinct, though there are still some out there in the galaxy.

6 - Strong with the Dark Side

The planet itself is a magnet for the dark side of the Force. Its grim atmosphere and its terrifying creatures also make it an extremely hostile environment. The planet’s connection to the dark side of the Force is so strong that it fills the Nightsisters' magic and breeds dark side users like Asajj Ventress, Savage Oppress, and Maul.

7 - Not Originally From Canon

Even if Dathomir’s mysteries have been explored a lot more in the new canon, the planet actually originated in Legends, where Dathomir is one of the most feared and mysterious planets in the galaxy. In fact, this is a planet that even Emperor Palpatine himself is extremely afraid of. Although Emperor Palpatine is extremely skilled with the dark side of the Force, he knows that the Nightsisters' magic would be a huge challenge.

The Nightsisters can create life and survive for many years using the dark side of the Force. Emperor Palpatine knows of Dathomir’s strength in the dark side for a while, and he even recruited his first apprentice from the planet. Many years before the events of The Phantom Menace, Palpatine comes to Dathomir to speak to the Nightsisters' clan leader Mother Talzin, in search for an apprentice. That is when Palpatine takes her son, Maul, who goes on to become powerful.

Dathomir is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting and mysterious planets within the Star Wars galaxy. Maybe in the near future, we will get to learn more about this grim and dark world…
