Short Story

The ride from Hanada to the university was quiet. The person who met Logan and Sara at the airport was also their driver and didn't speak a word of English. He was of average height, in his late thirties, and wore a suit. Logan looked around the car as the buildings blurred by him, catching a business' name every now and then. Sara was asleep next to him, lying on his arm. Her cancer was on Logan's mind now. How long she had, what she'd been through so far, and what the university could possibly do for her that she hasn't tried herself.

Passing through the gates marked University of Tokyo the car continued until it stopped in front of a building marked 研究棟132 in bold letters(research building 132). A near-balding man dressed in a blue business shirt and khaki's emerged, motioning for everyone to follow him. Still very much asleep, Logan carried Sara into the lobby and sat her in a chair. The business man joined them,

"Konnichiwa Logan-san, my name is Dr. Haneda Yoshita. I am the director of this lab." and he bowed respectfully, placing his fingers together. "I see you've brought Mrs. Evans. I'll have an assistant take her where she needs to go."

Logan, getting this sudden urge, blurted out "Be careful with her, we became acquainted quickly."

Dr. Yoshita smiled warmly and both men started down a hallway. The hallway was plain and had rooms up and down both sides, dictating the style of the building. This wasn't a doctors office, or hospital, or some facility that allowed children. This was a 100% adult facility. Both men entered a room and Dr. Yoshita closed the door behind them, "Please, have a seat so we can get started." The room was warmer then the hallway with a wood floor, paintings of various things on the walls and a tan couch to offset the white of the walls. Both men sat and the meeting began.

"I have infront of me a lengthy report from an emergency doctor in Utah explaining that you were bitten by a rabid Fennec Fox, is this correct?" Dr. Yoshita began.

"Yes." Logan replied

"Good." Dr. Yoshita continued, "But this Fox wasn't like any that frequent Utah. This one contained were-genes, correct?"

"Yes." Logan replied again

"Good". Dr. Yoshita continued, "Then explain to me Logan-san, why are you here? Everything seems to have been documented throughly."

"Dr. Maynard thought you'd be able to help me with this were-gene, as it's in me. He wasn't that concerned, but thinking about it, it wouldn't be a good thing having someone like me running around possibly infecting others if I turned." Logan attempted to explain, like a kid trying to conjure up a lie to a parent.

Dr. Yoshita thought about it for a while and closed the folder, "Logan-san I'm going to attempt to be honest with you. The Japanese are not..." Dr. Youshida gasped, "Logan-san! Your ears!"

Logan put his hands where his ears normally were and there wasn't any there, making his eyes widen. He then moved his hands up, following the ridge or something and rested his fingers onthe tips. They felt soft like plush. Dr. Yoshida took out a pointing device from his pocket and poked the new ears, before touching them himself, "These weren't here before or am I seeing things?" he asked still brushing the ears, "Their so soft!"

"Doc can I ask you stop please.. I'm stiff."

Dr. Yoshida retracked his hands quickly and sat down, "I apologise Logan-san, that wasn't my intention. Interesting how that does that to you though. It's rare enough for normal ears to do that." He took out a writing pad from his desk and began writing on it, "It's also interesting that just in the last five or six minutes of talking your ears have morphed from normal to.. uh, fox-like? I'll need prior approval first from the president of the university, however I'm sure we can work something out."
