10 Things You Never Knew About Carrie Fisher

Carrie Fisher, gone too soon on December 27, 2016, is remembered by fans around the world as Princess Leia from the Star Wars saga. She was a role model to many, a damsel who could do her own rescuing from her distress. Outside the galaxy far, far away, in our world, she was an inspiration. She spoke up publicly about mental health, a topic that is deemed as taboo and deserves to be discussed more openly. While not usually known as a comedy actress, she used her unique sense of humor to discuss her own experiences with bipolar disorder and drug addiction. We will always remember her witty banter on screen with Han Solo, calling him a "stuck up, half witted, scruffy-looking, nerfherder!" We will also remember her off screen words that will remain in our heart.

Here are 10 things you never knew about Carrie Fisher.

1.) She was born to stardom.

Her parents were actress Debbie Reynolds (Singin' in the Rain) and singer Eddie Fisher. Rounding out three generations of acting legacy, her daughter Billie Lourd is also an actress (American Horror Story). Billie portrayed Lieutenant Connix in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and stood in for her mother in a brief flashback scene.

Fisher was very close to her mother. They lived next door to each other for the last decade of their life. Debbie Reynolds passed away from stroke one day after her daughter's passing.

2.) Some of Fisher's ashes were placed in the coffin with her mother Debbie Reynolds, while the rest were placed in a giant novelty Prozac pill urn.

“Carrie’s favorite possession was a giant Prozac pill that she bought many years ago. A big pill. She loved it, and it was in her house, and Billie [Lourd] and I felt it was where she’d want to be. We couldn’t find anything appropriate. Carrie would like that. It was her favorite thing, and so that’s how you do it. And so they’re together, and they will be together here and in heaven, and we’re OK with that.”- Todd Fisher

3.) Meryl Streep was a very close friend.

Streep is the godmother of her daughter Billie Lourd. She also played Fisher's alter-ego Suzanne in the film adaptation of her semi-autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge.

4.) She was a successful script doctor that was frequently requested by many in Hollywood.

Though her work went mostly uncredited, she contributed to the scripts for The Wedding Singer, Hook, and Sister Act. She also reportedly was called in to work on the scripts of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

5.) The talented actress was also a bestselling writer.

She published several books including her autobiography Wishful Drinking, The Princess Diarist, and semi-autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge, which she later adapted into a film.

6.) She was a big dog lover.

Fisher and her dog Gary were inseparable. She adopted the French Bulldog in 2021 and he accompanied her everywhere from the red carpet to interviews.

7.) “Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?”

Standing at 5'1", Carrie Fisher frequently had to stand on a box for many of her scenes with the 6'1" Harrison Ford. Our short stormtrooper, Mark Hamill, is 5’9”.

8.) Fisher hated the revealing metal bikini from Return of the Jedi.

She jokingly referred to it as "what supermodels will eventually wear in the seventh ring of hell." She was able to channel her feelings for the costume into choking Jabba the Hutt in the next scene.

9.) She was not a fan of the iconic "cinnamon buns” hairstyle.

Calling it a "hair-don't" she claimed the hairstyle further widened her already wide face. She also was not happy at the amount of time it took to create the look.

"It took them two hours to do that hairstyle. I'd come in at 5 in the morning, before anyone.... Later on, I did Saturday Night Live.... They clunked a hairpiece on, and it looked exactly the same." - Carrie Fisher

10.) She also hated the white dress from A New Hope. In this case, it was because of what she couldn’t wear under it.

In her book Wishful Drinking, she recounted how George Lucas told her that she could not wear a bra underneath the iconic white dress as "there was no underwear in space." Incidentally, her breasts had to be taped together with gaffer tape. The humorous actress poked fun at it later on.

"What happens is you go to space and you become weightless. So far so good, right? But then your body expands??? But your bra doesn't—so you get strangled by your own bra. Now I think that this would make for a fantastic obit[uary]—so I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra." - Carrie Fisher
