1. The Potential of AI in Facilitating Communication with Animals In the 1980s, I observed a fascinating behavior among elephants: when one called out to a family member, only one individual would respond while the others remained unresponsive. Subsequently, the calling elephant would repeat her call, prompting a different elephant to raise her head and emit a loud rumble. This observation was made by Joyce Poole, who has dedicated 50 years to studying the communication patterns of African elephants. This led me to ponder whether these elephants possess a method for directing their calls to specific individuals, although we lacked the means to confirm this hypothesis at the time. Years later, Poole collaborated with Mickey Pardo, who designed a study based on her observations. I ventured into the field to record the calls while meticulously noting the behaviors associated with each sound. This allowed us to identify the caller, the intended recipient, and the context of each call. The acoustic data from these recordings were transformed into a numerical format, which, along with the information collected by Mickey, was analyzed. They input nearly 500 distinct calls into a statistical model, which demonstrated an impressive ability to predict the intended recipient of a new call based on its acoustic structure, significantly surpassing random chance. This finding provides compelling evidence that African savanna elephants may assign names to one another. When we shared this discovery on Facebook, a comment suggested that the Earth had shifted slightly, a sentiment I believe holds merit. This instance exemplifies how machine learning is unraveling the intricate nuances of animal communication that remain undetectable to humans. Currently, some AI researchers are exploring the next frontier: developing large language models, akin to those used in chatbots, specifically designed for interspecies dialogue. For instance, inquiries such as, “Can we discuss love?” or observations like, “There is still much to be learned about whales,” highlight the potential for deeper understanding. In the study of animal communication, researchers typically utilize several methodologies: capturing vocalizations, observing and documenting the behaviors and contexts surrounding those sounds, and occasionally employing playback techniques to gauge the animals' responses. Each of these approaches contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of interspecies communication.
