“WOOOOOOO!!!”

This story is inspired by a bedtime story that my dad used to tell me when I was a little kid. He would tell me this same story every night with the only change being the types of fishing lures used. I don’t know how my dad came up with it, or if he even did, but I felt the need to put it down in writing and share it!

John and his wife Mary lived on a small, quiet fishing lake with only a few other houses around them. They were in their early 60s, retired, and loved nature. The small house was perfect for them, plus it had an extra bedroom and a big yard for when their kids brought the grandkids. John’s passion in life was fishing. Every night he went out on the lake to fish and then the next day him and Mary would spend hours cooking the fish. They were living the life.

It was about seven o’clock on a late summer’s night and darkness was about an hour away. As John was loading up his fishing boat for the night, He kissed his wife and told her he’d be back in a couple hours. John then headed out to his secret fishing spot that he had not even shown to his son. The entire lake was good fishing but this spot was by far the best. He had only gone home empty handed two or three times in about four years.

It took him and his small fishing boat about 10 minutes to reach the spot, and after double-checking that no one could see him in his secret spot, he set up. He was using three rods. This night he set one with a spinner lure, one with a simple hook and bobber, and one with a fake minnow. After setting up his poles he cast them out one at a time, put them in the holders, cracked a beer, and sat back in his chair as the boat slowly rocked. He sipped his beer while watching his rods.

At that moment off in the distance he heard a soft wooooo noise. Assuming it was an owl, he ignored it and went back to fishing. After 15 minutes without so much as a nibble, he decided to switch up his lures. As he was recasting, he heard another wooooo, this time a little closer, but he still wrote it off.

Another 20 minutes passed and a fog was beginning to set in, so he decided to try one more set of lures and then call it a night. He really wanted to catch something so this time he put two of the rods away and went with only one, equipped with his lucky lure. Besides, with the fog he could hardly see so casting was difficult enough with just one rod.

After 5 minutes he heard another wooooo. This time even closer. He was starting to get scared but kept fishing. Only a few moments later he heard another, closer woooooo. Then another, and another.

“It’s getting quiet foggy, I think I'm calling it a night. I guess the fish just don’t want to bite,” John, frightened, said to himself as he quickly packed up.

As he was ready to leave he heard, no more then 15-20 feet away, a loud WOOOOOO! He went to start the engine but it wouldn’t start. Then a closer WOOOOOO!!!!! He was frantically pulling the cord. Now no more then five feet away from the boat he heard another, final WOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Just then the engine roared to life and john floored it home, not looking back once. When john pulled into shore he stumbled out of his boat, his skin a pale white. His wife rushed to him frantically asking, “Honey what happened? Are you okay?” All john could let out was a soft woooooo.

After that night John still fished on the lake, but he never went out at night and he hated to go alone.
