The moon hung low over the Sicilian hills, casting long shadows across the rugged landscape. Beneath its cold light, the sprawling estate of the Moretti family stood like a fortress, its high walls a reminder of the power and fear the family commanded. Inside, Sofia Moretti sat by the window of her room, staring out into the night, her mind a storm of emotions she couldn’t control. She had never felt more trapped.
Sofia was the youngest daughter of Vittorio Moretti, the head of one of the most feared mafia families in Sicily. For years, she had been kept away from the bloodstained business of her family. But she was no fool. She knew what the Morettis were—predators in a world of prey, always hunting, always watching. Like wolves, her father once told her, they were born to take what was theirs and defend it with teeth and claws.
But Sofia wanted no part of it. She longed for freedom, for a life where she wasn’t defined by her last name or by the sins of her father. And that desire grew even stronger when she met Leo Romano.
Leo was everything Sofia had been taught to fear—a man who had risen through the ranks of the rival Romano family with skill, intelligence, and a ruthless edge. He was known as “Lupo”—the wolf—because of his ability to outsmart and outmaneuver his enemies. His name sent shivers through the underworld. Yet, to Sofia, he was something entirely different.
They had met under the most unlikely of circumstances. Sofia had slipped away from a family event, desperate for a moment of quiet, and found herself walking along the edge of the Moretti estate, where the forest crept close to the mansion. The air was cool, and the faint sound of music and laughter from the party behind her made her feel disconnected, as though she didn’t belong there at all.
That was when she saw him.
Leo stood at the edge of the trees, his figure half-hidden in shadow. He shouldn’t have been there, not on Moretti property, but he didn’t seem concerned. His eyes, dark and intense, locked onto hers, and for a moment, Sofia felt her breath catch. He was dangerous—that much she could tell—but there was something else, something that made her unable to look away.
“You shouldn’t be out here alone,” Leo said, his voice low, almost a growl, as he stepped closer.
“And you shouldn’t be here at all,” Sofia replied, her heart pounding, though she didn’t retreat.
From that moment, their lives became intertwined. At first, they were careful, meeting in secret, away from the eyes of their families. They were wolves from opposing packs, bound by the rules of their world, yet drawn together by a force neither of them could resist. Every meeting was a risk, every touch a reminder of the deadly game they were playing.
For Sofia, Leo represented everything she had never known—freedom, passion, and a life where she could be herself. For Leo, Sofia was the only thing that brought light into his dark world of violence and betrayal. He had spent his life as a wolf, always hunting, always running, but with Sofia, he wanted to be something more.
Their love was wild, fierce, and forbidden, and it couldn’t last.
The tension between the Morettis and the Romanos had been simmering for months, and it didn’t take long for rumors to spread. Vittorio Moretti, suspicious of his daughter’s strange behavior, had her followed. It wasn’t long before he learned the truth—that his precious Sofia had fallen in love with the enemy.
When Sofia returned home one evening, her father was waiting for her in the study, his face pale with rage.
“How could you do this, Sofia?” Vittorio’s voice was cold, dangerous. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done? You’ve brought a wolf into our home.”
“I love him, Papa,” Sofia said, her voice steady despite the fear coiling in her chest. “Leo isn’t like you think.”
Vittorio slammed his fist on the table. “Love? Love has no place in our world! The Romanos are our enemies! They will never stop until they’ve taken everything from us, and you—” he pointed at her, his eyes burning with fury—“have given them the only weapon they needed.”
Sofia knew what was coming. There was only one way her father could ensure the family’s safety now. He would have Leo killed.
Terrified, she ran. She knew there was no time to lose. Leo needed to know the truth—his life was in danger. She found him waiting for her at their usual spot, beneath the cover of the trees, far from the estate’s eyes.
“They know,” she whispered, breathless and on the verge of tears. “My father… he’s going to come after you.”
Leo’s expression darkened, but he didn’t seem surprised. He had always known that their love would lead to this moment. Gently, he cupped her face in his hands, his touch as soft as his voice.
“I knew this day would come,” Leo said quietly. “But I would rather die loving you than live without you.”
Sofia’s heart ached with the weight of his words. “We have to run, Leo. We can’t stay here.”
But Leo shook his head. “Running won’t stop them. They’ll never let us be free.”
Before Sofia could protest, gunshots rang out from the darkness. The Moretti men had found them. Leo pushed her behind him, his eyes flashing with a fierce determination.
“Stay down,” he growled, pulling out his own weapon, ready to defend her with his life.
The air filled with the sounds of chaos—gunfire, shouts, and the snarls of men who fought like wolves over territory. In the end, only silence remained.
Leo, bleeding from a wound in his side, collapsed to the ground. Sofia rushed to him, tears streaming down her face as she held him close, her hands trembling.
“Don’t leave me,” she whispered, her voice breaking.
Leo looked up at her, his face pale but still filled with the fire that had drawn her to him in the first place.
“I’ll always be with you,” he murmured. “Even wolves… run in packs.”
And with that, the last light faded from his eyes.
Sofia was left alone, cradling the man she had loved—her wolf—in a world that would never understand their bond. As the moon continued its cold journey across the sky, she vowed that she would never forget him, the man who had shown her what it meant to love and be free, even if only for a brief moment.
