Gin — Hotarubi no Mori e

Winter — I’m wearing the scarf you gave me. It’s cold here without you.

I want to give you the mask but I know you won't take it so I wrote a note instead. In case that dreaded day comes.

I used to hate the Forest god for giving me this frail body. I mean, what’s the sense of living if I can’t go out there? Add the thought of bumping into another human being will get me dead — Can you imagine the horror of it?

The spirits have taken good care of me since. However, I see myself as a leaf. A green display alive but unable to move — until I met you.

Gah, thoughts in my head;

I wanted to catch you each time you fell on a tree,

I wish I could — I could,

But I can’t.

I have to play pretend that I don’t — that I never cared

so I could keep on seeing you.

Not that it made everything easier,

never did.

Remember the first time I took the mask off? I want to tell you how happy I was. I’m happy — I’m happy I’m with you. It was a sunset, perfect for a first kiss — if only I could.

It’s getting harder to breathe. I feel heavy. Seeing you makes all of it unbearable.

Will you answer a question for me;

“How does it feel to hold you?”

I won’t be able to stop myself the next time you fall — so don’t.

Words I can’t tell — you might jump at me. Terrible way to die, eh?

I’ll keep this.

If by chance you are reading this — I hope it’s you,

I wanted it to be you.

Summer is ours,

but I have to give yours back,

Get free.

I won’t miss you,

I’m on watch,

Gin
