When Daydreams Collide: The Hilarious Near-Encounter with My Crush
A Fantasy Gone Awry, A Heart Stopped, and A Moment of Pure Awkwardness
It was the kind of winter morning that made you want to stay in bed and avoid the world, but somehow, I found myself standing out in the schoolyard during recess. I was with my usual group of troublemakers hanging out with them on the school lawn. We were having a blast insulting each other and staring at pretty girls. The cold kept us rubbing our hands together, desperately trying to warm up, while the sound of our shivering teeth added life to the cold when the freezing breeze slapped us hard on the surroundings.
And then, out of nowhere, I realized all the warmth in my body oozing out, My eyes landed on someone so beautiful, it felt like the world had changed. My crush was out on the lawn under the sun. Her presence made everything around me seem brighter and more peaceful. The cold was gone, I no longer shivered or rubbed my hands together. It was as if the whole universe had become warm and calm, and I couldn’t take my eyes off her as she moved gracefully in the sunlight.
She was out there with two of her friends, their laughter and energy increasing the warmth of the surroundings and adding beauty to the universe under the sun. A few moments ago, the air had been cold and harsh, but now it felt calm and peaceful. I saw her chatting with her friends, probably smiling, and before I knew it, I lost control over my cheek muscles and couldn’t stop myself from smiling too. My body was re-energized, and my mind was blown out like I’d been transported into another world through a portal of pure joy. Her smiling face looked so beautiful that the angels and fairies would die of jealousy. It made me visualize as if rays of light were shining from behind her, showering flowers from the heavens, with romantic music playing all around.
I couldn’t stop myself. I started walking towards her, feeling like it was the perfect moment to finally talk to her. At least a ‘HI!’ would do. I needed to speak to her about anything. My heart raced with fear, and nervousness took over, but somewhere deep down, a tiny spark of hope and confidence helped me to stay steady and calm my trembling legs. As I got closer, She looked at me with questioning eyes. Her friends too noticed me coming and started smiling as they knew of my secret crush on her.
I finally managed to reach a meter distance from her. My heart raced with excitement, beating faster than ever, like a running carburetor. My body heated up with fear. Adrenaline was functioning much more efficiently
and adrenaline kicked in, flooding me with fright hormones at a faster rate and making it hard to breathe. She kept staring at me with confusion waiting for me to speak out something obvious about my behaviour. I tried to pull out all the confidence from around every corner of my heart to push through the awkwardness and say something.
I gathered to finally get out of this awkwardness and say something.
With all the bravery I could muster, I looked into her eyes only to witness the immense depth of them which was so fascinating that my confidence dived in search of the most valuable secrets of my universe hidden inside. With drowning confidence my tongue slipped and the vocal cord vibrated a ‘HI!’ with my right hand up my palm facing her with fingers half curled waving at her.
And then, she smiled. The confusion melted from her face, replaced by a warm, genuine smile. In the softest, kindest voice, she said, “Hi!”
My mind exploded with joy, my heart rejoiced, and I felt like my whole body was on fire. I couldn’t contain my excitement. I started jumping up and down, shouting “Yes!” right there in the moment. I had conquered the most difficult challenge of my life so far, and in that instant, I felt like the king of the universe.
As I was celebrating my success, Suddenly I felt a tight slap on my left cheek.

I was back to reality among those troublemakers. In the middle of my celebration, I accidentally stomped on one of their legs and punched another while jumping around. I was back to my senses only to realize I had been daydreaming again—nothing had happened. She was still a hundred meters away, happily chatting with her friends.
I was fantasizing again and nothing ever happened. She was enjoying herself with her friends at a distance about 100m from me. I sat down quietly with my pumpkin face hanging with embarrassment. My friends noticed, started laughing, and poked fun at me, looking at my face. I couldn’t help but laugh along with them, realizing how foolish I’d been.
Then, the school bell rang to announce that recess was over. We all got up, still laughing, and headed back to our classrooms, the brief moment of fantasy already fading away.
