We Don't Talk to Edith Thompson Part 8
Thrilling mystery Halloween short story.

Ch 8: Final Confrontation
October 31st, 2025- 11:27 AM
Somehow, we all avoided Edith. Either that, or she purposely allowed us to reach the woods to lay the groundwork. For what exactly? Well, for the end of everything, of course! I mention this not to seem excited; it was more like out of abject terror and dread.
Looking behind briefly, I saw a flaming trail of destruction. Danvers was a smoldering pile of debris, blood, and assorted body parts. If someone were alive somewhere, they surely weren't now. Poor Eric, Anna most likely didn't make it.
A sinister growl echoed, growing closer by the minute. We didn't have much time left!
Sabrina and Karina, still sobbing, called out in unison. "How much fucking longer!? She's on our ass!"
Rachel shouted from ahead of me, "Suzy, hold the necklace up! Its magical essence should make it glow when we reach the shrine!"
Picking up the pace, I made my way to the front of our minuscule group of survivors and held the cherished family heirloom as high as possible.
Please, please, show us where we need to go! I prayed silently, panting heavily as my heart pounded against my chest cavity.
At first, nothing happened. It bobbed limply on the leather string, looking utterly unimpressive.
"Please, show us where everything began! I beg you in the name of Agatha Thorn!" I cried aloud, tears streaming down my face as I clenched it tightly in my fist. "I need to stop Edith Thompson!"
Eric yelled, looking over his shoulder. "Fuck, she's gaining on us!!!"
The necklace sprang to life, vibrating furiously as it glowed with a blinding white light. It created a large orb that surrounded Eric, Mom, Rachel, and me. A warm, safe feeling filled the space. It appeared to have evaded the twin sisters. Perhaps was because of their bloodline? Or maybe those who meant Edith harm?
That made no sense because Sabrina and Karina's other friends were murdered, so why was Eric spared? Did something absolve him that we weren't privy to?
My train of thought broke when the necklace shot out a beam of light, pointing toward a wooden shrine/shed thing hidden behind some brush. That must be it!
"Over here!!" I shouted, guiding everyone toward our destination.
The ground rumbled as Edith's frail, yet surprisingly limber body rushed toward us; trees and bushes burst into flame at her presence.
With great difficulty, we shoved through the thick brush and reached the structure. Once the necklace crossed the threshold, it flickered rapidly as if it confirmed we were in the right place. The shrine became engulfed in a white light, as if it had disappeared from existence. In the blink of an eye, it was transformed into a well-designed yet humble shrine covered in various sigils and runes.
Rachel, Mom, Eric, and I made it inside the structure; the orb covering us became a shield of magic, presumably to block out the Satanic energy. A swell of confidence filled my chest, knowing that we had this advantage.
The Endecott twins weren't so lucky.
Edith shrieked, digging her claws into the ground. She cleaved it in two, causing a sizable, flaming chasm. Karina and Sabrina, lagging behind us, fell into it. Although judging by their frantic crawling and grasping, they didn't die.
Looking carefully, I noticed the two of them holding each other, dangling from a cluster of vines, swaying precariously over a pit of raging hellfire.
"Eric!" Sabrina screamed. Struggling to hold her twin, sobbing heavily. "Please save us!"
He looked genuinely distressed as he stared at them. Covering his mouth, pacing back and forth, he then slapped his face before settling on an answer.
"No, your family is fucking evil!!!" Eric retorted, holding a fist to his heart. "I knew something was off, but I never put the pieces together; then Rachel revealed everything. Not only did your family ostracize a teen girl after murdering her mother, but then you forced everyone to follow a dumb rule. If people broke that rule, they faced jail or even worse consequences!"
Sabrina frowned with disgust. "Are you fucking kidding me? We're going to die, and you want to play the White Knight!?" She removed a hand from a vine, pointing her finger at Eric. "You cheated on me!"
"I loved Anna, and now she's dead because of you!" Eric roared, tears streaming down his face. "The only reason I dated you was that my father said it was good press to date a public figure's daughter! I never loved you, or your stupid fucking sister!" He exhaled a few times before continuing. "I hope your entire clan rots in hell!"
At that exact moment, the vines snapped, sending the Endecott twins into the flaming pit below. Their screams of agony and betrayal, followed by the foul stench of burnt flesh, told us their unfortunate fate.
Edith cackled hysterically as she leapt over the chasm, landing just a few feet shy of the shrine's border. She tried slamming her body and claws into the shield, only to be sent flying backward, groaning in pain. Holy crap, she couldn't get in!
Rachel grabbed her satchel, tossing the various ingredients into a nearby silver bowl, and ordered, "I need your blood! Now before it wears off!"
Eric called to me, "Here!" then tossed me the pocket knife from earlier.
Frantically, I sliced my palm open and let my blood flow into the bowl. Once everything was mixed, it transformed into a glowing white potion. Rachel thrust it into my hands. "Drink it!"
Ugh, but it was just a bunch of weird herbs and my blood! Whatever, for survival, I guess!
Reluctantly, I chugged the strange potion. I expected it to be disgusting, but it tasted like honey and milk. When I finished the bowl, my body glowed, with swirling sigils appearing all over me.
Then, I grew taller, my hair became longer, and my voice was deep and sultry, like a mature woman's. What the hell was happening to me!?
Edith limped over to the border, eyeing me suspiciously. "A-Agatha? My friend...Is that you?"
I tried to tell her no, that I wasn't Agatha, but then my voice got taken over. "Yes, it's me. My dear friend, you've caused so much pain and suffering. What do you have to say for yourself?"
Slowly, and courageously, I walked outside the shield. Briefly, I saw my reflection in the veil, and whoa, I was someone else! A beautiful, shapely woman with very long dark brown hair. This must be the vestiges of her magic, as Rachel said.
To my surprise, Edith trembled as she replied,"T-They killed h-her...my Mommy...then treated my bloodline like scapegoats of misfortune. Surely, you understand my reaction?"
I nodded. Wait, why was I nodding?
"You deserved better, as did your bloodline. However, you made me promise to stop you if it went too far." I reached for my hips and grabbed long, twin scythes. They glowed white, presumably imbued with magic. "It has."
She stumbled as she approached, nodding in agreement. "Y-Yes, I suppose it has." Edith held her arms out. "May I have a last hug? Before I die?"
Tears filled my eyes, and I nodded.
Once my arms were wrapped around Edith, a surge of memories flooded out of her. Happy ones about her mother; a long period of loneliness, and a young Eric placing flowers on her grave, saying he's sorry.
Then, there are several instances of me just talking to her casually, Mom being kind to her, Rachel joking around with her during a check-up, and finally, the worst one.
A little Edith, cowering in a dark, burning corner. She was sobbing heavily, calling aloud, "Mommy, please help me! It's dark, scary, and hot!"
Inhaling deeply, I released my friend, plunging one scythe into her heart and the other into her head. Edith gasped at first, then smiled contentedly. "Thank you, I can join my mommy in the afterlife now!"
Her body slowly hardened; turning into stone. The sigils on my body transfer over to Edith's. Before her throat sealed up permanently, she croaked, "You're the best friend I've ever had. I'm sorry for everything... Suzy."
Then, she was petrified. A solid structure in the image of a monster.
Unable to look at it anymore, I touched its chest and forced the rest of Agatha's power into Edith, shattering the statue into millions of pieces.
It was the last thing I remembered before passing out.
Six days later...
I finally awoke, but not to a favorable situation. Evidently, a lot had transpired during my slumber.
Rachel filled in the gaps for me. And honestly? It completely sucked. First, local authorities from the next town over were called, so police and firefighters were all over the place. Based on their survey, there were no survivors. Weird, right?
No, apparently not. The shield masked our physical presence for several hours, so no one could see us. Essentially, their system registered all of us as deceased.
Thank God for Rachel, though; she seemed prepared for this weird situation. She 'knew' a guy who made fake identities for us. It meant that we could get around and have access to things while also not revealing that we survived a demonic-witch apocalypse.
Since then, we've been wandering around.
Our destination wasn't set in stone, and I have no clue what kind of future awaited us, but I knew one thing for certain:
Fuck the entire state of Massachusetts!
The End.
Thank you, everyone, for reading this story! This is the grand finale of Edith. Originally, I wanted it to come out on Halloween, but I had a lot going on.
Love you guys!
