There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. 300 years ago the Opius, the World organization regulating magic, planned to bring them back as powerful weapons to combat the Torrey. The Torrey were rising in power and threatening to reveal the true nature of magic to the ordinaries. The plan was to discreetly administer an elixir to a small fleet of Sky Warriors in the public eye, as to not stir trouble. They were directed to take a delaying capsule, then return to the camp in the woods for a monitored transformation. Morgan Lister, a highly decorated witch selected for this mission let her guard down leading to three ordinaries being exposed to magic becoming the first dragons since extinction, they are known as accidentals.
A wireless phone in the diner rang and rang while Morgan discreetly retreated to her office away from the kitchen. She set the vile of excavated remains on her desk next to a pitcher full of lemonade. She removed the cap delicately pouring each drop into the pitcher as she chanted, “backs grow wings,” a drop, “bodies with bones stronger than stones,” a drop, “gleaming scales, claws sharper than nails,” drop, “long tails that whip, fire that spits,” as the last drop fell into the now orange liquid she proclaimed, “human by day and dragon by night; everlasting life!” The room filled with smoke pouring out as she rushed to the counter to spot the teal blazer and sweatpants worn by the Sky. A waitress hastily handed her the phone, breathlessly stating, “your going to want to hear this!” Morgan took the phone setting down the pitcher as tears filled her eyes.
Valerie sat in a booth waiting for her wife who went to the bathroom. The music was blaring old outdated rock n’ roll songs. Smoke rolled out of the kitchen into the seating area as if a fog machine was cranked on in the kitchen. A yawning waitress returned her credit card and topped off her orange juice, telling her they were about to close up. Valerie nodded as she picked up her glass. She scanned the room impatiently sipping her drink as her mouth puckered up with every sip. She constantly looked to the bathroom hall to see if her wife was done as she readied their to go containers in a bag to go. She kept noticing the staff starring at her and the other guests getting shuffled out politely.
A waitress walked up to the table filled with people in teal and white uniforms and informed them Morgan would be right over. As their gaze followed her away from their table they saw Morgan in shock as she dropped the phone. Valerie was on the floor convulsing and shaking violently. Curled up in a ball, she screamed in agony, her back bleeding as fresh wings prodded through her flesh expanding in size within blinks of an eye. Spanning outward they toppled tables, windows shattered, and the roof crumbled like sand as her body enlarged within seconds. Her skin stretched into shiny hues of green, red, black, and yellow. Shrieks filled the diner as the sound of bones stretching rattled the room. Within minutes she was looking down from the ceiling at other guests starting to drop to the floor. Claws scratching at the ground unable to find balance like nails on a chalkboard. The length of her spine protruding as she whipped it back and fourth crushing the jukebox. The scales of her extremities glimmering like the suns reflection on a lake as she gazed around the room and counted two others bellowing out as their bodies began to change.
In shock, Valerie tried desperately to understand what was happening. Her initial reaction was to run, but she had to find Lillian. Lillian was hugging the wall tightly in fright starring up at the enormous length of Valerie’s massive reptilian body. As they made eye contact, Val opened her mouth as it protracted outward. Fig, a Sky Warrior, called out to Brock as he threw a rope lassoing her jaw shut. They worked together lassoing each shimmering beast to the ground harnessing them tight. Valerie saw Lillian coming out the hall. Before she could tell her to watch out Brock swung a rope. He called out to his fleet to hurry up and tie their maws shut. Black blood from the dragons fighting the restraints covered the booths, the walls, the ceiling, the counters, and everyone in the Diner. Fig was yelling at Morgan about her negligence, but she was going on and on about a kidnapping.
Within moments a back up fleet of Sky Warriors appeared as fire started to whip and snap out of Valerie's nostrils as she fought in a fury. Drawing guns harnessed on slings over their shoulders they shot each dragon with a tranquilizer. As they fell to the ground helplessly a slew of newscasters began to show up. Snapping very little shots of the event.
Over the years a few articles in entertainment magazines or folklore blogs revamped that night. None of the patrons at the diner, nor the workers were ever seen again. People on occasion gossip about seeing fire in the valley. For the World of magic the incident is deemed a tragic attempt to smear the name of the Opius. The Torries continue to tell the tale in hopes to inspire outrage and attempts to trespass on the Opius territory. The Sky Warrior’s call the Valley, the Valley of Accidentals. The original fleet and their decedents are appointed by the Opius to protect the secrecy of the Accidentals, and monitor the well being of the unfortunate ordinaries living an eternity as prisoners to protect the order of the Opius.
