Two Things I Know for Certain
There are two things I know for certain when I first lay eyes on the man before me.
The first is that he is dangerous. Not in the theatrical way of villains who monologue and twirl their mustaches. No, his danger is quieter than the stillness of a predator before it strikes. The kind that does not need to prove itself because it already knows what it is capable of.
The second is that he is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
And that, I realize with a sinking feeling, is going to be a problem.
The First Certainty: Danger
He stands in the doorway of the tavern as if he owns it, like he owns everything the light touches. The patrons who were loud moments ago fall silent. Conversations die mid-sentence. A man at the bar drops his glass. It shatters on the stone floor, but no one moves to clean it up.
He does not look at them. He looks at me.
There is no malice in his gaze. No warmth, either. Just assessment. Calculation. The same way I might examine a blade before deciding whether to pick it up.
The air between us feels wrong. Charged. Like the moment before a storm breaks.
I cannot read his mind, but I can feel the weight of his attention heavy, focused, and entirely uninvited. Every instinct I have is screaming at me to run. To leave. To never look back.
But my feet stay rooted to the floor.
The Second Certainty: Beauty
He is not handsome in the conventional sense. His face is too angular, his jaw too sharp. A scar runs from his left temple to the corner of his mouth, a silver line that catches the firelight. His hair is dark and unkempt, falling across his forehead like he does not care enough to push it back.
And yet.
There is something about the way he stands coiled, ready, completely at ease that makes my breath catch in my throat.
His eyes are the colour of storm clouds. Grey and grey and grey, with flecks of something darker at the edges. They hold mine without blinking, and I feel seen in a way that makes me want to look away and never look away at all.
He is not beautiful in the way of paintings or poetry. He is beautiful in the way of fire, and storms, and other things that destroy what they touch.
The Problem
The problem is not that I am afraid of him. It is that I am not afraid enough.
The problem is that I want to step closer, to see what happens when I do. To push against the boundaries he has drawn around himself and see if they hold.
The problem is that I already know with absolute certainty that this man will change everything.
And I am not sure I want to stop him.
There are two things I know for certain when I first lay eyes on the man before me.
He is dangerous. He is beautiful.
And I am already in trouble.
