Blood-red stalks of fibrous nerves stared at Gunnarsson through milky water. Mustard color puss swirled erratically around the creature.
Gunnarsson gripped his rifle. How many friends died because of these invaders, now so weak and meager within its prison? How satisfying would crunching those disgusting stalks under his boot be?
Naked before him, it returned his leer – pain and pity trapped within grotesque biology.
“Isn’t she beautiful?” a white-suited lab tech said.
“Not exactly…”
“It’s the only specimen we’ve collected. Invaluable, really. Olympus Mons will be ecstatic.”
Before the tech could continue, marines in mechanized armor approached.
“We’re Oscar Mike.”
