Chapter 8: Assault and Attrition
The jungle was alive with chaos. Smoke coiled like serpents through the charred underbrush, and the cacophony of battle was deafening. Nick’s Skyshadow XV8 Crisis Suit thundered into the fray, jetpack roaring as Ork slugs pinged and ricocheted off his armor. The crude munitions left faint scorch marks on the advanced Tau alloys but failed to penetrate. Inside the cockpit, Nick felt every impact rattle through the suit, his fingers dancing across the controls with practiced precision.
The plasma rifles mounted on each arm flared to life, releasing synchronized bursts of searing blue energy. Each shot vaporized a charging greenskin, the violent explosions of superheated plasma reducing Ork bodies to ash and ichor. The battlefield was illuminated in flashes of fiery blue, the cries of the dying drowned by the relentless roar of combat.
“T'ralor, I’m pinned near the central ridge!” Nick called out over the comms, his voice tight but controlled.
The reply was instant, calm yet commanding. “Hold your position, Skyshadow. I’m moving to provide cover.”
From the smoke emerged Commander T'ralor's XV88 Broadside Battlesuit, its massive frame a stark contrast to Nick's nimble Crisis Suit. The ground quaked with each step of the Broadside, the heavy rail rifles on its shoulders glowing faintly as they charged. With the grace of a master marksman, T'ralor unleashed a devastating volley. The hyper-velocity slugs tore through the Ork ranks, leaving gory, smoldering craters where mobs once stood.
The Orks howled in defiance, their brutish war cries reverberating through the jungle, but T’ralor was unrelenting. A volley of smart missiles (SMS) streaked from his shoulder-mounted pods, weaving through the jungle’s dense cover like predatory birds. The missiles detonated amidst the Orks attempting to flank, a chorus of fiery explosions scattering green limbs and twisted metal in every direction.
“Kepler, focus fire on those shootas on the ridge!” T’ralor barked, his voice sharp and cutting through the comms like a blade.
“On it,” Nick confirmed, gritting his teeth as his jetpack roared to life.
He soared above the battlefield, the wind whipping past his cockpit as his targeting systems locked onto a cluster of Orks manning heavy shootas on the ridge. The makeshift weapons roared, spitting fiery tracers into the air, but Nick’s counterattack was merciless. Plasma bursts and missiles streaked toward the ridge, erupting in an apocalyptic blast. The shockwave flattened nearby foliage and sent green bodies spiraling into the air like grotesque ragdolls.
“Nice shot,” T’ralor remarked, his rail rifles already reloading as his stabilizing hydraulic arms shifted to maintain position. Below, the earth quaked with the force of his next missile barrage, annihilating another wave of charging Orks.
As dawn broke, the battlefield revealed its horrors. The jungle was a scarred, smoking wasteland littered with Ork corpses and shattered war machines. Yet the greenskins pressed on, their fanaticism driving them into the teeth of the Tau defense.
“Keep your focus, Kepler!” T’ralor’s voice cut through the din as Nick’s Crisis Suit darted between craters and burning debris.
“I’m focused, T’ralor, but these greenskins just won’t quit!” Nick retorted, his plasma rifle cutting down a squig-rider in a burst of sizzling blue.
“They rarely do,” T’ralor replied coldly, his advanced targeting systems locking onto a hulking Ork Killa Kan. The mechanical monstrosity burst from the undergrowth, its saw blades spinning wildly as it thundered toward the Tau line.
T’ralor’s rail rifles roared, the slugs slamming into the Killa Kan’s hull with a resounding crack. The impact sent sparks flying, but the crude Ork construction held firm.
“Nick, soften it up! My reload is delayed!” T’ralor commanded.
“On it!” Nick responded, his Crisis Suit launching a volley of missiles that streaked toward the walker. The explosions left the Killa Kan lurching, its saw blades spinning erratically as smoke poured from its joints.
T’ralor seized the opportunity. His rail rifles discharged in unison, the slugs punching through the Killa Kan’s core. The walker erupted in a fiery explosion, the shockwave rattling the nearby suits as debris rained down.
The jungle trembled as Krugskull’s Stompa emerged from the shadows, its towering frame blotting out the sun. The massive war machine was a patchwork monstrosity, bristling with jagged armor and crudely welded weapons. Its gargantuan saw blade tore through a Tau Hammerhead, the vehicle’s hull splitting like kindling under the devastating force.
“T’ralor, that thing is unstoppable!” Nick shouted, weaving through the chaos as the Stompa’s cannons unleashed torrents of firepower. Explosions ripped through the Tau lines, scattering troops and shattering vehicles.
“Not unstoppable,” T’ralor replied grimly. “But it’ll take everything we’ve got. Shas’vre, coordinate with Crisis Team Theta and target the legs. I’ll keep its main weapons suppressed!”
T’ralor’s Broadside Battlesuit dug into position, the stabilizers locking into the ground with a hiss of hydraulics. His rail rifles charged, the faint hum growing to a crescendo before they unleashed. The first slug struck the Stompa’s shoulder-mounted rockets, detonating in a fiery cascade that staggered the behemoth.
“Direct hit!” Nick shouted, firing his plasma rifles at the Stompa’s legs.
The war machine groaned under the assault, its crude joints buckling as missile barrages from T’ralor’s Broadside slammed into its armored hull. The Stompa retaliated, its cannons targeting the Broadside with a storm of explosive shells. T’ralor’s shields flared, absorbing the brunt of the attack, but cracks began to form.
“Stay focused!” T’ralor commanded, his voice unwavering.
Nick’s Crisis Suit soared upward, launching a final salvo of missiles at the Stompa’s knee joints. The explosions severed cables and shattered pistons, sending the war machine toppling like a felled tree. As it crashed to the ground, T’ralor fired one last rail slug into its core, igniting its volatile reactor. The resulting explosion was blinding, a fireball that consumed the jungle in light and heat.
The battlefield fell silent, save for the crackle of flames and the distant roar of retreating Orks. T’ralor’s Broadside Battlesuit stood amidst the smoldering ruins, its armor battered but unyielding. Nick’s Crisis Suit landed nearby, its sleek frame bearing the scars of the grueling fight.
“Held the line,” Nick muttered, his voice weary. “But at what cost?”
“We live to fight another day,” T’ralor replied, his tone resolute. His Broadside turned toward the jungle, its servos groaning. “But this isn’t over. Krugskull will be back. And when he is, we’ll be ready.”
