Chapter 4: Losses

Days later, the jungle erupted in fire and smoke as Krugskull’s Waaagh descended upon the Tau defenses with ferocious intensity. The air crackled with the thunderous roar of engines and the screech of battle. The Orks had returned, their war cries a cacophony of madness, their war machines more brutal and deadly than ever before.

Nick, now more confident in the Skyshadow battlesuit, moved through the chaos like a vengeful spirit, his actions fluid, almost instinctual. His HUD flared as targets locked on, and in an instant, missiles streaked from his shoulder pods, carving through the advancing Ork hordes like a scythe through wheat. A group of Boyz burst into flames, their screams drowned out by the roaring engines of Ork warbuggies. The fusion blaster on his battlesuit flared brightly, sending a lance of molten energy through the armored hull of a warbuggy, turning it into a sizzling crater of burning metal and twisted scrap. The smell of burning fuel and ozone filled the air.

But the Orks had brought more than just numbers—Krugskull’s Gorkanaut, a monstrous, crude amalgamation of twisted steel and rusted metal, tore through the jungle with a primal fury. The towering behemoth’s footsteps shook the ground, each thundering step reverberating through Nick’s bones. Krugskull himself, a hulking beast of muscle and madness, bellowed insults and challenges as the Gorkanaut's massive guns fired indiscriminately, ripping through the ranks of Tau and their auxiliaries.

“I’M KRUGSKULL IRONJAW! WHERE’S DAT PUNY HUMIE? COME OUT AN’ FIGHT ME, YA GIT!” the Warboss howled, his voice a guttural growl that rumbled through the trees.

T’ralor, ever the strategist, immediately moved to intercept the Gorkanaut, but Vren stepped forward, raising a hand. "No, Commander. Let me handle this. Kepler, cover me," she ordered, her voice calm yet filled with determination.

Nick hesitated for a moment. Vren had trained him well, but this was beyond anything they had faced before. Still, he nodded, trusting her judgment as she advanced toward the massive machine. She launched herself into the air with a powerful burst from her battlesuit’s jetpack, rocketing toward the Gorkanaut. Nick followed, his Skyshadow weaving between trees and Ork debris, his fusion blaster lighting up the sky with deadly precision.

Vren and Nick moved in tandem, a deadly dance of destruction. Vren flanked the Gorkanaut, her plasma shots searing through the thick hide of the behemoth, while Nick targeted its vulnerable points with railgun fire, piercing its outer armor. But Krugskull wasn’t easily deterred. The Gorkanaut shook off their blows as if they were nothing more than an annoyance, its crude plating dented but unyielding.

With a roar of defiance, Krugskull slammed a massive fist into the ground, sending shockwaves through the jungle floor, knocking trees and Tau soldiers alike to the earth. "Ya think you can stop me, humie? I’M DA BIGGEST AN' DA BADDEST!" he bellowed.

Vren didn’t flinch. With a unhinged, almost suicidal grin, she activated her jetpack and propelled herself directly at the Gorkanaut’s exposed side. She was a blur of motion, heading straight for the massive metal beast. In a split second, she collided with the Gorkanaut with a deafening crash, the force of the impact sending a shockwave through the jungle. The explosion was cataclysmic—a blinding ball of fire and energy as Vren’s battlesuit detonated on contact, its self-destruct systems engaging in a desperate final act of defiance.

The Gorkanaut reeled from the blast, its legs crippled, smoke and sparks pouring from its torn and twisted frame. Krugskull was thrown from his cockpit, tumbling into the dirt like a ragdoll. His armored body slammed into the ground with a bone-shaking thud, but he quickly scrambled to his feet, roaring with rage and disbelief.

Nick’s heart stopped as the smoke cleared, revealing the wreckage of what had once been Vren. Her battlesuit, a mangled heap of broken metal and scorched plating, lay in the dirt. The jungle fell eerily silent for a moment as the realization set in—Vren was gone.

“NOOOOOO!” Nick screamed, his voice raw with anguish. His vision blurred, rage and grief consuming him as the battlefield around him disappeared. His mind locked on Krugskull, who was standing amid the wreckage of his Gorkanaut, howling with laughter.

"So, da humie’s back! Let’s see what ya got!" Krugskull mocked, his voice dripping with malice.

Nick’s grief turned to fury, and without a second thought, he activated Skyshadow’s jetpack, propelling himself toward the Warboss. His fusion blaster roared, sending streams of molten energy toward Krugskull, but the Warboss shrugged off the blasts as if they were mere inconveniences. Krugskull’s power klaw snapped in the air, creating a deafening crack as it swung toward Nick’s head. The sheer power of the blow rattled his bones as he narrowly dodged, feeling the heat of the klaw's passage.

Nick’s pulse pounded in his ears as he fought to stay alive, darting around Krugskull's brutal swings. The two clashed in a brutal melee, the Warboss’s overwhelming strength contrasting with Nick’s agility and precision. Krugskull’s massive fists hammered down, each blow leaving deep dents in Skyshadow’s armor, each strike shaking Nick to the core. But Nick fought with everything he had, every movement a reflection of the harsh training Vren had pushed him through. He slashed and fired, using his fusion blaster to melt through Krugskull’s crude armor.

With a savage roar, Krugskull swung his power klaw down with unrelenting force. Nick dove to the side, narrowly avoiding being crushed, and in the split second of vulnerability, he activated Skyshadow’s jetpack at full power. He shot forward like a missile, closing the distance between himself and the Warboss. With a scream of defiance, Nick fired his fusion blaster at the exposed back of Krugskull, sending a concentrated beam of destructive energy into the Warboss’s spine.

Krugskull howled in pain as the blast seared through his armor, but the monstrous Ork refused to fall. “Dis ain’t over, humie!” he roared, his voice laced with fury.

With that, Krugskull staggered back, using his power klaw to rip trees from their roots and throw them as makeshift weapons. He began to retreat, dragging his wounded body and the remnants of his Waaagh into the jungle.

Nick watched, his chest heaving, a bitter taste of victory and loss in his mouth. Vren was gone. And Krugskull, though wounded, had escaped. The battle wasn’t over—but the cost had been steep.
