"Tonight You're Sleeping With Me" is a Polish-language romance drama, an original Netflix production directed by Robert Wichrowski and written by Anna Janyska and Anna Szczypczynska. Unfortunately, the film falls short of expectations. Nina (played by Roma Gasiorowska) had a passionate affair with high schooler Janek (Maciej Musial) in the past. Now, with Janek working as her assistant in Poland, Nina's loveless marriage to her husband Maciek (Wojciech Zielinski) becomes increasingly unbearable. The film delves into the dilemma Nina faces as she contemplates whether to prioritize her family's stability by remaining with her husband or to chase true happiness by eloping with Janek. However, neither the characters nor the narrative captures my interest or evokes any emotional investment.

The premise of "Tonight You're Sleeping With Me" is already challenging. Making a compelling romance about infidelity requires careful execution to justify the protagonist's physical and moral choices. Unfortunately, the movie fails to accomplish either. The relationship between Nina and Janek lacks romantic or sexual interest; they come across as average and unremarkable. While Nina's perpetual misery isn't her fault and doesn't reflect poorly on her character, it undermines the potential for strong sexual chemistry.

Similarly, Janek is simply an ordinary, conventionally attractive individual. His ability to buy gifts for kids and deliver clichéd lines may elicit swoons from someone starved of affection, but it does nothing for me. Knowing how to iron a shirt or have fun doesn't make a person interesting; they are basic prerequisites for potential interest, which Janek barely fulfills and fails to exceed in any way.

Another crucial aspect in convincing the audience that a character should leave their spouse is establishing reasons to despise or loathe the partner. "Tonight You're Sleeping With Me" spends most of the film attempting to evoke such sentiments toward Maciek, and it succeeds to a large extent. He is portrayed as highly controlling, terrible at communication, and even abandons his responsibilities to embark on a trip to Iceland. However, Toward the end of the movie, an abrupt change in tone confuses the trajectory, undermining the clear direction it had initially established.

This ambiguity could have been intriguing in a different film, particularly if it left Nina in a precarious position. However, by the end, I no longer care about her choice because both options seem undesirable. The movie's attempt to redeem Maciek doesn't alter my opinion of him as a husband or father. Moreover, Nina and Janek's relationship feels entirely inappropriate.

A workplace affair can be intriguing, but a bland one with someone you met when they were still in high school? Not. This revelation completely turned me off. From the beginning, the movie presents an uncomfortable dialogue between Janek and another character at work, including inappropriate and borderline harassing remarksThe existence of an inappropriate power dynamic in their relationship is already a cause for concern, and adding another layer of impropriety without making their connection exciting is too much. Their interactions include mundane walks in uninteresting locations and uninspiring, poorly-lit sex in Janek's house. It fails to engage me.

The only redeeming aspect I can think of is Nina's vibrant and colorful wardrobe. In a movie that is generally devoid of color, dimly lit, and populated by uninteresting characters, her attire offers a visually appealing element. The movie also briefly touches on a conversation between Nina and Janek about bodies, corporealness, and the distinction between our bodies and genders. While this subject holds promise for being captivating, it ultimately goes nowhere and feels like a distraction when their relationship mainly revolves around their desire for each other. Rather than developing these themes further, "Tonight You're Sleeping With me"
