Attorneys on Deck

In the Thomason home, Myson sat down with his father for a meal.

“What are you planning to do?” Thomason asked.

Myson looked at him. “We’re going to go up against the Board in the courts.”

Thomason sliced into his steak with a little more aggression than was necessary as he responded to his son. “My lawyer was on call for a moment like this. I want you to know you’re going to represent every student in this country, maybe the world for freedom from state. Even in a private school like Cooney, you’d expect to keep the liberty. They’ve proven how the goddamn theory backfired.”

“I’m just trying to graduate, Dad.”

“I realize that, son. You must see you have the power to change everything. With your elocution, your very voice, you’ll be able to lift the veil of justice and show its face to the world.”

“I see what you’re saying dad. I’ll be going to DIT next fall. At that school, there is no God, but thank God, there’s also no theory; they’ve banned it. All we’re doing is putting down bricks for the rest of the school to follow. It certainly weighs on my mind.”

At the Tinkerton home, the conversation sounded a similar refrain. Gadot jabbed at a little tomato in her bowl.

“You’re going to go all the way on this, right?” Ophelia asked her daughter.

Gadot sat up straight and cleared her throat. “Yes. Myson and I are prepared for whatever the Board throws at us. They tried to intimidate us, but we didn't budge. We are going to fight.”

“Do we need to help in any way?” Tinkerton asked.

“Of course. We’re going to need your attorneys. We’re going to need Mr. Kelly, and Miss Horning. It would be ideal to have as much firepower to bring down a Board, hungry and willing to knock down anyone in its path.

As the Thomasons finished their meal, they outlined a plan to get their attorneys Carter Rocker and Moore Rowe, to the table.

Myson’s father picked up the phone. “Hi, Moore. I know it’s after hours, but could you just begin—”

“Todd, don’t worry about it. I was just vaping. What’s up?”

“It’s Myson.”

“He hasn’t been caught with a DUI has he? He’s still got his learner’s permit. Is he hurt?”

“No, nothing like that. It’s his school. We’re looking for references for representation. We know you’re an injury lawyer.”

“I can make some calls.”

“That’d be great,” Thomason replied.

“I’ll try to hold of some firms that handled cases where students won huge settlements,” Rowe said.

“Yes, money. That’s wonderful. The principle of cash. If he and his schoolmate win, we’ll put the cash towards Myson’s college plan,” Thomason said.

“I see. It’s going to cost you, though. But it’ll be cleaner. He’ll get attention from lawyers that will help him and his friend. You did a great job with him, Todd.”

“I think so,” Thomason answered.

“I’m going to do my rounds in the morning, and keep you well informed concerning the lawyers,” Rowe replied.

“Thanks, Moore.”

The Tinkerton’s already had lawyers waiting, like rottweilers ready to devour the flesh of the Board members, metaphorically of course.

“We’re going to ensure that you and Myson alert the rest of the school to this nonsense, but first we must deal with the legal matter,” Ophelia explained.

“We’re going to have our lawyers who will be going up against a behemoth, but they will have the backbone to withstand whatever the school’s lawyers will throw at them. We also have to remember there’s a towering educational might and a machine rolling to crush us. We’re not going to let that happen,” Tinkerton turned to his daughter. “What do you think, Gadot?”

“I think we’re going to need the best of the best. Of course Myson and I will be witnesses to the harm of the theory. We’ve reached a point where it has caused mental harm. To the teachers, too.”

The Thomasons reviewed the plan and the way in which Myson would handle his part of the case.
