Chicago never truly slept, but on that rain-slicked night, the city seemed to hold its breath. In a cramped college apartment, nineteen-year-old Jolene River lay in bed, listening to her boyfriend Ziller sing badly in the shower. It was an ordinary moment, the kind that felt eternal until it wasn’t. The bedroom light flickered, and when it steadied, Ethan Perez stood beside the window. A vampire of over a century, Ethan’s obsession with Jolene had long been a dangerous secret. When he kissed her, she kissed back, unaware that Ethan’s adopted sister, Edie a witch far more powerful than him watched from the doorway. With a single, sickening snap, Edie broke Jolene’s neck. By the time Ziller emerged from the bathroom, his girlfriend was dead in Ethan’s arms, and his voice was stolen by supernatural force. All he could do was scream silently as grief curdled into rage.

Beneath the bed, Ziller found a black leather book he’d never seen before. Its pages held a spell not for resurrection, but for rewriting reality itself. Driven by loss, he lit candles and chanted words that tasted like ash. “If this world won’t protect them,” he vowed, “then I’ll make a world that does.” White light consumed the apartment, and when Ziller opened his eyes, everything had changed.

He woke in a body that was no longer his own. The mirror reflected a woman with his eyes, his face, large breasts, and male anatomy intact. But the horror went deeper: Jolene was gone. No records, no photos, no memory of her existed. Searching her name yielded nothing. The spell hadn’t just transformed him; it had erased her from existence. Stepping outside, Ziller discovered a world reordered. Women dominated every sphere of authority police, politics, business and possessed greater physical strength. Men were vulnerable, deferential. Biology itself had been rewritten: some women had male anatomy, some men had female traits, and men could now carry pregnancies. He had wanted safety for women; instead, he had remade humanity.

At university, no one questioned his new form. To everyone, Ziller Edward had always been a woman. Only a cryptic phone call from Ethan offered a sliver of truth: “Someone wanted you to believe I killed her.” Before Ziller could respond, Edie appeared in the hallway, smiling as she murmured, “Interesting.” She knew him, though he didn’t know her. Later, in an empty classroom, the spellbook reappeared, its warning unchanged: There is no reversal. A whisper echoed “Every spell has a price” and Edie’s reflection materialized in the cracked window. “Brother,” she said. When Ethan called again, his voice was grim: “Edie is not who you think she is. She’s your sister.”

Confronted in the classroom, Edie revealed the truth with cruel satisfaction. She had orchestrated everything: Jolene’s death, Ziller’s grief, the spell’s corruption. “You asked for a world strong enough to protect the people you loved,” she said. “You just never stopped to think about what the world would have to become.” Ziller realized too late that his rage had been a tool, his pain a lever. Edie had waited years for him to break, knowing broken things are easiest to guide. As she stepped closer, her smile widened. “Hello, brother. Or should I say… hello, sister?”

In that moment, Ziller understood the true cost of his wish. He had sought justice, but Edie had delivered vengeance. The world he’d rebuilt was hers to dismantle, and he was trapped within it, wearing a body that mirrored his loss, living in a reality where the person he’d tried to save no longer existed. Chicago still glowed beyond the window, indifferent to the family tragedy unfolding in its shadows. The L-train rattled in the distance, its metallic scream echoing through a city that had forgotten Jolene River but would never forget what her death had unleashed.
