The Wolf Beneath the Moon

A mysterious attack in the Beacon Hills preserve awakens something inside Ethan—and reveals a supernatural threat far more dangerous than a werewolf.

Sixteen-year-old Noah Carter had always believed that Blackwood was an ordinary town. It had a high school, a grocery store, a football field, and the same quiet streets where everyone seemed to know everyone else. But there was one place nobody talked about—the forest beyond the old bridge. According to the stories, people who entered the forest after midnight sometimes disappeared. Noah never believed those stories until the night he heard his name whispered from somewhere deep among the trees.

It was nearly midnight when Noah was driving home from his friend's house. The road was empty, and a thick fog covered the trees on both sides. As he crossed the old bridge, his headlights suddenly went out. Noah pressed the brakes and looked around nervously. Then he heard a strange sound coming from the forest. It sounded like a wolf howling, but underneath the howl was something almost human. Noah reached for his phone, but there was no signal. Before he could start the car again, something slammed against the passenger-side window.

Noah jumped. He turned toward the glass, but there was nothing there. Then he noticed four deep scratches running across the window from the outside. His breathing became faster. He started the car and drove away as quickly as possible. He didn't look back, but he could hear footsteps running alongside the car. They were keeping up with him.

The next morning, Noah woke up with a terrible pain in his shoulder. When he looked in the mirror, he saw three long scratches across his skin. He had no memory of getting them. Even stranger, the wounds were already healing. Noah stared at them in disbelief before covering them with his shirt.

At school, his best friend Jayden immediately noticed that something was wrong. Noah told him about the forest, the scratches, and the strange creature that had followed his car. Jayden laughed at first, but his expression changed when Noah showed him his shoulder. Before either of them could say anything, a new girl named Mara walked past their table. She stopped when she saw Noah and stared at his wound.

“You went into the forest last night,” she said.

Noah looked at her in confusion. “How do you know that?”

Mara didn't answer. Instead, she quietly said, “Whatever you heard in there, you should forget about it.”

Noah stood up. “Why?”

“Because it heard you too.”

She walked away before Noah could ask another question.

That night, Noah couldn't sleep. Every sound in his house seemed louder than usual. He could hear his parents talking downstairs even though their bedroom door was closed. He could hear cars passing several streets away. He could even hear the heartbeat of someone standing outside his bedroom window.

Noah slowly opened the curtain.

There was nobody there.

Then something moved between the trees across the street. Two glowing eyes appeared in the darkness. Noah stepped away from the window, but the eyes disappeared. His phone suddenly vibrated on his desk. A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.

You were never supposed to survive the bite.

Noah stared at the message, his hands shaking. Another message appeared.

Now they know you're alive.

The next morning, Noah searched for Mara. He found her sitting alone behind the school. When he showed her the messages, she finally told him the truth. The forest was home to creatures that had lived around Blackwood for generations. Some were protectors, some were hunters, and some were monsters. The creature that attacked Noah was an Alpha, the leader of a supernatural pack.

“But why did it attack me?” Noah asked.

Mara looked directly into his eyes. “Because it wanted to wake something inside you.”

Noah laughed nervously. “I'm not a werewolf.”

Mara didn't smile. “Look at your hands.”

Noah looked down. His fingernails were slowly turning into claws.

His heart began pounding.

Mara grabbed his arm. “Don't panic.”

“What is happening to me?”

“You're changing.”

Noah's eyes flashed gold.

For the first time, he understood that the creature hadn't attacked him because it wanted him dead. It had attacked him because it wanted him to become something.

That evening, the entire town lost power. Every streetlight went dark at the same time. Dogs began barking throughout the neighborhood, and then the howling started. Noah stood outside with Jayden and Mara, staring toward the forest. One by one, pairs of glowing eyes appeared between the trees.

Mara whispered, “They're here.”

A massive creature stepped out of the darkness. It was taller than any human, covered in black fur, with golden eyes and enormous claws. Noah recognized it immediately.

It was the creature from the forest.

The Alpha looked directly at him and smiled.

“You finally remember,” it said.

Noah stepped forward. “Remember what?”

The Alpha's smile disappeared. “Who you really are.”

Before Noah could respond, another howl came from deep inside the forest. The Alpha suddenly looked afraid.

Mara grabbed Noah's arm. “We have to go.”

“Why?”

“Because that wasn't one of them.”

The trees began shaking. Something enormous was moving through the forest, destroying everything in its path. Even the Alpha stepped backward.

Noah looked at Mara. “What is that?”

She stared into the darkness.

“The thing that your family has been running from for generations.”

Noah felt his claws emerge again. His eyes turned bright gold as the creature finally stepped into the moonlight.

And when Noah saw its face, he realized something that terrified him more than anything else.

He knew that creature.

It was his father.
