The Wise of Wisdom

In a quiet mountain village, there lived an old man everyone simply called the Wise One. He had no wealth, no title, and no followers. Yet people from distant places still came to him when life became too heavy to understand. One evening, a young man arrived. His eyes were full of fire and frustration. “I don’t want advice,” he said. “I want power. I want to be respected. I want people to remember my name.” The old man didn’t argue. He only nodded and asked him to walk with him. They reached two rivers. One was loud, rushing violently over stones, breaking everything in its path. The other was calm, flowing quietly through the valley, shaping the land slowly over time. The old man said, “Which one looks stronger?” “The loud one,” the boy replied immediately. The old man smiled. “And which one creates life that lasts?” The boy said nothing. Years passed. The boy followed the loud river in life. He chased power, fought battles, and became feared by many. But respect never stayed, and peace never came. One day, everything he built collapsed in a single moment of consequence. Broken and empty, he returned to the old man. “I lost everything,” he said. The old man replied gently, “No. You chased noise, not wisdom.” Then he placed a small stone in his hand. “True wisdom is not loud. It is steady. Like water shaping stone, not breaking it.” For the first time, the boy understood: wisdom is not in force, but in patience.
