The unlabelled jar
A Drabble about boundaries, assumptions, and unintended consequences

Chantal arrived at the shared house for a month; she immediately helped herself to everything.
Entitled, ignoring boundaries, she went through shelves and foods that weren’t hers. She used anything from oats to unlabelled glass containers--she disliked plastic.
One evening she discovered a jar filled with what looked like chia seeds and stirred a spoonful into her yoghurt.
Days later she collapsed and died. The autopsy revealed the truth: they were laboratory larvae, part of another student’s biology experiment.
They had consumed her stomach and intestines from within. Her housemates never again left experiments in the kitchen--or their food unlabelled.
