The Sundering of Realms
The Sundering of Realms: A Mage's Journey

Taeral Stormborn tightened his grip on the worn leather reins, urging his silver mare Everwind into a gallop. The urgent shout of Captain Verran still rang in his ears.
"The realm barrier has been breached! Warn the outlying villages before all is lost!"
Taeral spurred Everwind on faster through the overcast predawn mist. Dark magical energy crackled in the air, discordant and foreboding. He could feel waves of force pulsing across the land - regular pulses of power keeping tempo with his pounding heart. Something had gone terribly wrong, unleashing maelstroms of elemental magic. He had to get to Ambervale before one of the raging storms did.
The dirt path narrowed as crumbling cliffs rose up sharply to the right. A branch snapped, making Taeral flinch. A large owl, its feathers flecked with purple, burst from the canopy shrieking. The tortured cries of animals filled the forest. The chaotic magic unleashed was mutating creatures throughout the wilderness.
Taeral glimpsed the glowing runes carved into the cliffside, marking the entrance to the Ambervale Domain. A crackling portal swirled within the archway. Taeral rode through, leaving the material world behind.
Vhalia Silverwing stood atop the gleaming Citadel of Light, squinting against the bitter wind as she surveyed the city below. Ambervale sprawled out picturesquely, stone buildings with amber shingled roofs clustered around cobblestone streets. Beyond the outer wall, farmers tended crops in the valley, oblivious to the looming threat.
First Enchanter Joras approached, his blue robes snapping in the wind. His deeply lined face was creased with worry, his bald head reflecting the angrily flashing storm clouds gathering over distant jagged peaks.
"First Enchanter, have we received any word from the Master Archmagi at the Central Spire?" Vhalia had to shout over the howling winds. "We must reinforce the realm barriers at once!"
Joras shook his head grimly. "No word yet, Guildmaster. Their silence is troubling. The Amethyst and Emerald realms have already fallen. The Sundering is upon us."
A peal of thunder boomed across the mountains as violet lightning split the sky. Vhalia felt the citadel stone tremble beneath her feet. Below Ambervale, citizens gazed fearfully at the crackling skies. She had sworn an oath to protect them all. She would not fail now.
"Order the city evacuated into the catacombs," she commanded. "And ready the battlemage contingent. We make our stand here."
Taeral clung tightly to Everwind as she galloped down the forest trail. Giant spiked brambles sprouted wildly across the path, evidence of the magical contamination warping the environment. He raised his hand, channeling willpower into a concussive force bolt that blasted the vines away.
They broke through the tree line onto a ridge overlooking Ambervale. Taeral's heart clenched at the sight of the magnificent city under siege. Dark purple storm clouds swirled overhead, pelting the citadel with lightning strikes. The farmlands below were now a hellish landscape of lava and crumbling rock. Everwind reared in terror at the sulfurous fumes.
"Courage, girl," Taeral soothed. "We must reach the city." He wheeled her around towards the main bridge across the chasm separating the ridge from Ambervale. A bolt of violet energy sizzled past his head. Everwind screamed as a hulking grotesque beast leapt into their path from the charred underbrush.
The creature stood on two legs but was covered in mangy fur with curved ram horns. Its left arm was hugely overgrown and ended in wicked black claws. The warped abomination growled, swiping a claw towards Taeral.
He reacted on instinct, hand extended, palm out. A luminous shield of pure light materialized, deflecting the claw swipe in a flash of sparks. Taeral focused his thoughts into razor-sharp spear of telekinetic force, launching it directly into the creature's heart. It collapsed with an anguished howl. The magical plague was infecting beasts and spirits alike.
Taeral approached the bridge. Raging torrents of purple flame barred the way. Dark silhouettes of soldiers could be glimpsed through the violet blaze. The enemy had reached the gates. Taeral steeled himself. He would save as many citizens as he could.
"Steady now, lads and lasses!" Guildmaster Vhalia called out, raising her glowing emerald battlestaff. The squadron of two dozen battlemage trainees tried their best to hide their fear. They were only half-trained, mere novice mages compared to the forces of the Amethyst Realm now assaulting their city. But they were the last line of defense.
Outside the citadel gates, violet flames engulfed the city center as shrieking winged necromancers descended from the stormy skies. The clattering of skeletal soldiers echoed up the citadel steps.
"Remember your training! Lock arms and reinforce your wards," Vhalia commanded. "On my signal, unleash your focus blasts!"
The young mages clasped hands, channelling protective energy. Swirling glyphs and sigils appeared around their feet, barrier wards against dark magic. The gates rattled violently as undead began bashing them down.
"Steady now..." Vhalia said, her voice almost a whisper. She raised her staff high. "Unleash your power!"
The trainees thrust their palms out in unison, beams of pure white light erupting through the gates in a tsunami blast. The skeletal horde shattered into bone fragments from the luminous barrage. The young mages cheered, their fear momentarily forgotten.
Vhalia allowed herself a grim smile. But the battle was far from won. A colossal winged demon plunged from the sky, writhing tentacles sprouting below its fanged maw. Vhalia leapt forward, emerald staff blazing.
Taeral crouched behind a crumbling battlement atop the nearly demolished outer wall. All around, guild mages clashed against spectral invaders while citadel towers burned. He had managed to help ferry two groups of citizens to shelter in the catacombs beneath Ambervale before the advancing dark armies forced him to take cover in the ruins.
There was still one group unaccounted for - school children cowering beneath their academy just a hundred yards away. But between them stood a roiling field of sparkling violet energy, a manifestation of the Sundering spell plague. Passing through it would infect or kill anyone without magic blood.
Taeral focused his mind, extending his senses outward until he touched the fabric of magic itself. He mentally grasped at threads of elemental energy - heat, force, light - and wove them into a telekinetic lance. With a grunt of exertion, he launched it with pinpoint precision into the heart of the swirling contaminant.
The plasma blast exploded in a blinding flash, dispersing enough of the corrupted field for Taeral to see the ghostly silhouettes of children clinging together beyond it. He had no choice now - he would brave the barrier or they would perish.
Taeral braced himself and sprinted towards the swirling energies. Plunging through was like being dissolved and reformed simultaneously in a sea of acid. He fell to the ground shaking, his veins burning with foreign magical essences. But he had made it through. The children turned to him with desperate, fearful eyes.
"Quickly now, follow me!" Taeral urged, fighting the alien power now inside him. Their little faces etched with hope, the children joined hands behind Taeral. Together, they plunged into the darkness of the underground passage.
Guildmaster Vhalia stood precariously atop the crumbling central spire of the citadel, amber lightning crackling along her battlestaff as she prepared to unleash her ultimate spell against the looming demon overlord Xa'loth. The armies of the Amethyst Realm had overrun Ambervale despite fierce resistance. Only Xa'loth's destruction could stop the Sundering now.
The demon beat leathery wings, hovering before her over the decimated city square below. In the distance, mighty realm barrier mountains lay toppled, finally breached by dark forces. The Sundering of Realms had reached the final domain - only Ambervale still stood. But it too would fall without this final incantation, forbidden magic she alone could unleash.
Xa'loth roared, a gust of sulfurous wind nearly knocking Vhalia from her perch. This was it - the guildmaster began her death chant, weaving together the most dangerous and volatile magics into a doomsday spell that would unravel the demon's very essence. She felt reality tremble and crack as torrents of unbound power coursed through her body.
"Your doom has arrived, beast!" Vhalia cried. "My life for Ambervale!"
She released the volatile magics. A blinding explosion rocked the entire valley. When it cleared, Xa'loth stood unmoving, disintegrating into ash that scattered in the wind. The demon overlord was no more. But the top of the central spire lay demolished. Among the rubble lay the diamond-tipped amber staff, charred and shattered next to Vhalia's motionless body.
Ambervale had survived the Sundering. But the cost was dear. Taeral Stormborn would need to take up the mantle of leadership amidst the chaotic aftermath, and guide the refugees towards an uncertain future in the new Broken Realm. Much work lay ahead to rebuild and defend their home from future threats. But the story was far from over.
