The Stillness in the Storm
Frost Ratu The Face of Grace, The Voice of Silence
Then there was Frost Ratu.
If Blaze was the fire that drew every eye, she was the stillness that held it all together. Where he blazed, she steadied. Where he spoke, she listened and then agreed. She was the calm at the centre of every storm, the one who never seemed to break, never seemed to waver, never seemed to doubt.
I watched her so many times on the screen. While chaos raged around her, she stood as if carved from winter sky, cool, composed, unshakeable. She would raise a hand, and floodwaters would slow, turning from raging brown torrents to sheets of glassy ice. She would step through smoke and flame as if the heat could not touch her, her expression serene, her movements graceful and sure. She did not need to shout to be heard. She did not need to threaten to be obeyed. Her authority was quiet, absolute, assumed by everyone, including me.
She was the one who reached out to frightened children. The one who knelt to speak to people who had lost everything, her voice soft and steady, her gaze kind. While Blaze dazzled the world with what he could do, Frost Ratu won its heart with who she seemed to be. Gentle. Wise. Good.
I thought that was what true power looked like not burning bright, but remaining calm. Not forcing the world to look at you, but being someone people could lean on. I admired her most of all, in a way. Because she proved you could be strong without being loud. You could be formidable and kind. You could stand beside the brightest fire and still shine with your own light.
My father would sit quietly in the other room, and I would look at her poised, perfect, publicly good and wonder why anyone chose silence when they could be like this. Why hide when you could help so openly? Why stay unseen when you could be the calm for so many?
I did not know then that stillness can also be silence. That being steady can mean never saying this is wrong. That grace without courage is just a mask.
The day the sky turned dark over Kuala Lumpur, she was exactly as she had always been. While Blaze descended in fire, she moved through the rubble with quiet purpose, helping people up, checking faces, speaking soft words of comfort. She was the same. Calm. Kind. Perfect. The crowd loved her. They called her their guardian, their grace.
And then Blaze gave the order.
“Eliminate the rest,” he said. Cold. Sharp. Final. “No prisoners. No witnesses.”
I looked at her. I waited. She was the one who saw the people. She was the one who spoke to the frightened. Surely she would say something. Surely she would turn to him and say wait look at them. They are hurt. They are surrendering. We cannot.
She did not.
She simply nodded. Once. Slow, solemn, certain as if he had said protect them, not destroy them. Her face did not change. Her calm did not crack. She turned toward the smoke, and she moved.
I stepped forward, small and shaking, my voice barely there. “Wait, some of them put their hands up. They surrendered.”
Blaze answered. Frost said nothing. She did not look back. She did not hesitate. She walked into the grey, drifting smoke and vanished.
I walked home through streets still singing her praises. Frost Ratu was wonderful. So brave. So kind. She helped so many. No one knew what she had done. No one knew what she had not done.
I thought about her all the way the woman I had admired most. The one who showed you could be strong and gentle both. And I realized: being calm is not the same as being good. Being graceful is not the same as being true. And the most dangerous thing of all is when the person you trust to speak for the vulnerable says nothing at all.
That was the day I learned: it takes more than stillness to stand against the storm. It takes more than a kind face to be truly kind. It takes courage to speak even when everyone else is silent. Even when it costs you everything.
