It was quite a snowfall for New Jersey. The kids were off from school, as was I. By kids, I mean my two daughters. I also mean the other four girls who get on at our bus stop.
"Sure!" I said to everyone who asked. "One of the advantages of being a teacher is having snow days. Of course you can drop your kids off on your way to work. Be sure to pack outdoor gear."
The snow came Sunday night into Monday. By 9:00 I had a full house of girls. Everyone was so excited until they went outside. They discovered that it's cold out there in the snow. They had runny noses.
"Can we have hot chocolate?" It was 10:12. They came in for cocoa and TV. Then they were fighting. I muddled through the battles.
School was closed all week. The school parking lot was too icy to clear.
Wednesday I made them go out to build a snow fort. I came out to inspect. I wanted to be sure there was an airhole in the ceiling, that the doorway was sound, and they had made snow blocks to sit on. Actually they fashioned a full-length sofa. I brought them blankets and lunch.
On Thursday morning they couldn't wait to get to their outdoor home. By afternoon they got bored, cold, and wanted their electronics.
On Friday I placed food on the counter for them. I packed a bag of warm provisions. I had a lovely day.

LESSON LEARNED
I thought that after I finished college I would get a chance to be wild and free. I’d get a job at an advertising agency in the city and spend my days in a nice office, go to meetings where we’d brainstorm ideas for commercials, and earn enough money for my own little apartment with IKEA furniture and a slightly boho vibe. I’d thrift a trendy wardrobe, go out to dinner with the new friends I’d make, and plan occasional weekend getaways to beaches and ski slopes. I saw myself learning to cook, jogging along the Hudson River, and keeping up with the latest books and movies. Instead I am scrubbing a smelly microwave caked with years of grime, bacteria, and grossness.

Doing it for the troops
The others dropped like flies around me. We fought and struggled to get to this point. I'm the only one left now. The objective is right there. A mere two hundred feet away. The last of my team got a bullet to the head right next to me, but I couldn't do anything. I was able to locate and neutralise the sniper as he shot my friend, so his death was at least not in vain.
