In Scandinavian folklore, he is said to sprinkle sand or dust on or into the eyes of children at night to bring on sleep and dreams. The grit or "sleep" (rheum) in one's eyes upon waking is the supposed result of the Sandman's work the previous night.

*

enter the sandman

*

Another day over

As darkness sets in

Sleepless like the others

While the moonlight creeps in

*

While dreams come for other’s

He sits wide awake in the dark

He lays under the covers

Daylight’s stress, left its mark

*

Exhausted by sunlight

He longs for sleeps warm embrace

A nemesis of starlight

A fight to escape being awake

*

As he lies in the shadows

Voices crawl down the hall

To dream of the wild flowers in meadows

As long last, sleep comes to call

*

A long shadowed figure

Stands up over the bed

Places a whatsamajigger

High up, over his head

*

He pulls from his pocket, a worn, weathered bag

Full of mystical dreams, lined with magical sand

Waving as he dismounts his sleep-filled, silver stag

Carefully he drops a few sprinkles from his mysterious hands

*

A few sand grains scatter out onto the floor

Catching the sandman by complete surprise

Another try and he is able to pour

What remains- right there, in his eyes

*

It stung for a moment

But, a few blinks and he fell

Sleep, the winning opponent

Of the sandman’s ultimate spell

*

The dreams started in an instant

From the wild flowers to the sea

He was the sandman’s grateful new tenant

Enjoying what comes with some sleep

*

When he woke to the sunlight

He still had sleep in his eyes

Would he sleep again tonight?

He was sure gonna try

*

So when sleep comes this evening

You should answer the call

Don’t fear what your perceiving

The sandman comes for us all
