The Quiet in the cornfield.

Not still, Silent.

The corn behind your homestead had always been loud at night — wind hissing through the stalks, crickets sawing their legs together, the occasional fox slipping between rows. But tonight, Lisa, the field was silent.

Not still.

Silent.

You noticed it when you stepped onto the back porch with your lantern. The air felt wrong, like the humidity itself was holding its breath. Even the rabbits in their hutch were pressed to the far corner, ears flat, staring at the corn as though it were a predator.

You took one step off the porch.

The corn answered.

Not with wind.

Not with an animal.

With a voice.

A thin, papery whisper threaded between the rows — too soft to understand, too steady to be natural. It rose and fell like someone practicing speech for the first time, shaping sounds without knowing their meaning.

Your lantern flickered.

The whispering stopped.

Then something tall shifted in the darkness, bending the corn outward as it moved. You froze, pulse hammering, because whatever it was… it wasn’t walking. It was leaning, dragging itself forward in long, slow tilts, like a scarecrow learning how to fall.

The lantern dimmed again.

And the thing spoke — clearly this time.

“Lisa.”

Your name, but wrong.

Stretched.

Dry.

As if spoken through a mouth full of husks.

You backed toward the porch, but the thing leaned closer, its silhouette rising above the corn. You could see its head now — too narrow, too long — and its arms dangling like broken branches.

“Lisa,” it repeated, more confident now. “Come help me.”

The lantern went out.

The cornfield erupted in motion — not wind, not animals — but dozens of shapes rising from the rows, all tall, all leaning, all whispering your name in that same brittle voice.

You ran for the door.

Behind you, the chorus followed, dragging themselves after you with slow, hungry tilts.

“Lisa…

Lisa…

Lisa…”

You slammed the door, locked it, and pressed your back against it, heart pounding.

The whispering stopped.

But the silence outside wasn’t empty.

It was listening.
