The Quiet Below
The Dreamscape of Niko Skarsvic
Niko dreamed of the cliff first, like always. — the same sheer drop of stone beneath his boots, the same clean horizon, the same measured wind brushing past him in steady intervals. He stood at the edge, hands in his pockets, looking down at the ocean far below.
Tonight, the water wasn’t empty.
A woman was already in it.
She drifted just beyond the break, her dark hair fanning around her like ink. The waves moved around her with strange precision, as if adjusting themselves to her presence. Even from this height, Niko could see the scar that cut across her face — a pale line catching the muted light.
And her eyes.
One was brown.
The other was half green, half blue — and it glowed faintly beneath the surface, pulsing with a rhythm that didn’t match the tide but somehow complemented it.
She wasn’t swimming.
She wasn’t sinking.
She was simply… there, suspended in the water as if listening to something only she could hear.
On the beach below, a man stood watching her.
Still.
Silent.
Unmoving.
Niko couldn’t see his face, only the way he held himself — grounded, deliberate, like someone who belonged to the shoreline. The ocean didn’t pull at him or resist him. It waited.
The man stepped forward.
Slow.
Steady.
Purposeful.
He walked into the water as if entering a familiar room, the waves parting around him with quiet intention. He never looked away from the woman. She didn’t turn toward him. But the ocean reacted — a subtle shift, a distortion in the pattern Niko had been tracking.
He crouched, studying the alignment.
The man waded deeper.
The woman’s glowing eye brightened.
The water around them rearranged itself, forming a shape Niko almost understood.
Almost.
Then the ocean spoke.
Not in words — in movement.
A single pulse rolled outward from the point where the two figures met, a ripple that traveled up the cliff and vibrated through the stone beneath Niko’s boots.
The man and the woman vanished.
No splash.
No struggle.
Just gone — swallowed by the ocean’s voice.
All that remained was a faint glow beneath the surface.
Her mismatched eye.
Half green, half blue.
The half colored eye shining like a signal.
Niko leaned forward, trying to decode the meaning before it faded.
And he woke — breath steady, mind racing, the image of that single glowing eye still burning behind his own.
