The Prophecy

There weren't always dragons in the Valley.

By Tanvir BhandohalPublished 4 years ago • 5 min read

There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. But one spell gone completely wrong and now dragons roam everywhere in the Valley.

I was about 5 years old when my grandfather, who was the best wizard in the valley, cast the wrong spell by mixing up his words. While at the time no one was happy with what had happened, things have taken a complete turn since then.

Everyone loves the dragons, and every family has at least one of their own. They are some pretty helpful creatures.

“Good morning, Lucy,” my dragon Arden greets me as I walk down the stairs. The morning heat had made Arden sweat a bit and I could see it glowing on her green and blue scaly skin. I could smell the sugary sweet smell of dragon sweat as I walked down the stairs. Fascinating enough, dragon sweat was used to make incredible healing potions that no witch or wizard could have even dreamt to create all on their own.

Arden had already made our breakfast and was watching her favourite television show. Yes, the dragons are able to eat and drink the same things as we can.

“Morning Arden, how was your night?” I ask as I join Arden on the couch with my breakfast. Food around here usually tastes kind of stale. Thankfully though, today was different. I just went grocery shopping yesterday at the only shop that provides fresh everything. Fresh meat, fresh grains, fresh fruit, the list is endless. Too bad nothing stays fresh for too long in the valley anymore.

“It was good! I came up with a plan for what we can do today to figure out your grandfathers’ prophecy.”

“That’s great Arden! Let’s quickly finish our honey cereal and then you can tell me your plan!”

As I said, my grandfather was the best wizard in the Valley. Unfortunately, a few years back he disappeared. Everyone adored my grandfather so when the news of his disappearing spread across the Valley everyone was devastated. We tried finding him but there was no trace left behind. Even his dragon, which was the first dragon created, was gone. Everyone went to my grandfather for help so without him we all felt lost. Since his disappearance nothing has been the same; food is just one example.

It has been 3 years since his disappearance and we are all doing our best to hold the Valley together like my grandfather did, but it isn’t the same.

Thankfully, before my grandfather disappeared, he left a prophecy. Arden and I have been trying to figure out what his prophecy means so that we can find him. So far, we have had zero luck. Hopefully the plan Arden has come up with today will get us somewhere.

“We need to head over to your parents house,” Arden tells me once we finish eating.

“Why?” I ask scratching my head. I had just visited my parents yesterday.

“Lucy, you may be blonde haired, but I know that you aren’t dumb. We need to figure out the prophecy and we need to go talk to them!” Arden rolls her eyes jokingly while saying this and I let out a giggle. Arden is a funny dragon.

We make sure to lock up the house before leaving. Every window and door needed to be tightly shut and secured before we left. There have always been sorcerers who have wanted to use my grandfather’s powers for their evil plans, but he always knew how to protect himself. Ever since the news of his prophecy spread around the Valley, the sorcerers have been trying to steal it so that they could get to him before I could.

I make sure to cast a spell that will keep the house secure, and Arden does the same. The dragon spells have always been much stronger than a regular witch or wizard spell.

We decide to walk to my parents’ house as it isn’t that far away and both me and Arden love walking. And if we did get tired Arden would just continue the commute by flying us there.

About halfway there I hear some leaves rustling. “Did you hear that?” I ask Arden and we both start looking around. There was zero wind so there was not possibility of the leaves rustling on their own. There had to be someone there.

Suddenly I am jerked upward and in a second I am being raised towards the sky. My heart starts beating at an abnormal rate and I have no idea what is going on. My grandfather always said, “listen to your intuition, being scared can teach you a lot of things” and right now I was scared. I was waving my arms and legs like a crazy animal, and I let out a sudden loud noise that I had never heard myself make before.

The only thing that I was learning right now was that I know how to make this sound. What else am I supposed to learn from this.

One thing was going on in my mind, and that was that we were not careful enough and now the sorcerers had me. My mind was racing so fast I couldn’t even think of a spell to save myself.

I looked down and Arden was nowhere to be seen. Was she taken by the sorcerers too or had she escaped? Will she come to save me?

Suddenly I hear a really loud growl and it sent vibrations through my body. I looked to see it was Arden. I had never in my 20 years of life heard her growl this loud. I knew she was going to save me one way or another.

The next few minutes seemed like a blur to me. Arden flew straight into the sorcerer holding me. The impact was so hard that it sent me flying across the Valley. Arden used her lightening quick speed to catch me and bring me down to the ground.

“Are you okay?” She asks me.

“Thanks to you I am. Arden you were amazing today and if it weren’t for you, I would be gone, and my grandfather’s prophecy would be in the wrong hands.” It got me thinking what would have happened had they gotten their hands on the prophecy. No witch or wizard would ever be able to live a good life ever again.

We needed to be even more careful than we already were. We cannot let this happen again and with the sorcerers attacking like this we would have to find my grandfather even faster.

I hope that Arden’s plan will work and I hope there will be no problems along the way.
