The prince and the princess

The sun shone brightly on the palace grounds, bathing the garden in golden light. The birds cheered as a royal carriage made its way through the gate and into the courtyard. Inside the carriage sat a young man, his face pale and tinged with pain. He held onto a single rose—a symbol of his love—as he made his way toward the castle doors.

There was a feeling in him he had never had before—a mixture of joy and sadness, pain, and relief. While he sat in the carriage, his mind was divided. His love for the princess was deep in his heart, and at the same time, he could not think about the king's request or demand. It was a difficult one, of course, but one that could not be compared to his love for the princess. The only question on his mind was how to become a princess's husband as a poor man.

The princess sat absentmindedly, wondering if the prince would ever show up for the wedding. She had heard his father, the king, give his demand to the prince, and she was not comfortable with that.

Deep in her mind, she thought of running away to meet the prince if he failed to show up. Another thought was to inform her father, the king, that she would commit suicide if the marriage never took place.

The young man was Count Felix of Blackmoore. He had come to this foreign kingdom to find true love and found it in the unlikeliest places. The young kingdom princess, Lady Trista, captured his heart. But their love was not meant to be, for the princess was promised to another nobleman.

The father of this nobleman and the king were friends for a long time. Their families have had a long-term collaboration, and they thought it was proper to cement this collaboration with a marriage between the children.

It is worth noting that even though the marriage to this nobleman, Jack, was agreed upon by the two families, the princess did not love Jack. She had never dreamed she could spend her entire life with him. The bond or foundation of marriage, love, was absent from the relationship.

The king had begrudgingly accepted Count Felix's proposal but made one demand: the count had to pay a hefty price for his love. He had to give up all his wealth, titles, and possessions. Felix accepted the terms without hesitation, for his love for Trista was greater than material wealth.

The atmosphere in the palace was the same as every other day. The king had not made any special preparations as he knew Felix would never return for his daughter.

Some of the palace advisers were unaware there was such an event in the palace that day. Those who were present had come to the palace for one reason or another, just to discover that something of that magnitude was about to take place.

When Felix arrived at the castle, the princess' father met him. He presented the single rose he held as a symbol of his love and devotion. He promised he would never give up, even if it required all he had.

The king, moved by the young man's courage, allowed Felix and Trista to marry. The couple had a happy and prosperous marriage; their love was richer and more fulfilling than anything money could buy. They both paid the price of love but received an invaluable reward.

The king found out that marriage should be a free and personal decision of the partners, without any outside influence of any kind. From that moment on, he made a firm law that parents could guide their children in making a choice in marriage but not be the ones to choose their partners. This law is still respected in the kingdom today.
