“The Poor Man Who Changed My Life Forever

Sometimes the greatest lessons come from the people who have the least”

Written by (Matiullah) Once there was a young boy named Saad who lived in a busy city with his family. His family was financially stable, and he had everything he needed—good clothes, a comfortable house, and enough food every day. But despite having everything, Saad was not satisfied. He always complained about small things. If his phone was not new, he felt unhappy. If food was not his favorite, he became angry. He believed that happiness comes only from having more. One day, Saad was walking on the street after a long day at college. He was feeling irritated because his friends had better things than him. As he walked, he saw an old poor man sitting on the roadside. The man was wearing old, torn clothes. His face showed signs of struggle, but surprisingly, he was smiling. Saad felt curious. He thought, “How can a person with nothing be happy?” He went closer and asked, “Why are you smiling? You don’t even have proper clothes or food.” The poor man looked at him kindly and said, “My son, I smile because I am thankful for what I have.” Saad was surprised. “What do you have?” he asked. The poor man replied, “I have life, I have breath, and I have hope. That is enough for me.” Saad did not understand his words and thought the man was just trying to hide his pain. The next day, Saad passed by the same place again. The poor man was still there, sitting calmly. This time, Saad decided to sit beside him. They started talking. The poor man told him about his life—how he lost his family, his home, and everything he owned. Yet, he never lost his faith in life. Saad asked, “Don’t you feel sad about your past?” The poor man smiled and said, “If I keep thinking about what I lost, I will lose what I still have.” These words touched Saad’s heart. Days passed, and Saad continued meeting the poor man. Slowly, he started noticing something different. The poor man never complained. He always spoke kindly and stayed peaceful. One day, Saad brought some food for him. The poor man accepted it with gratitude and said, “Thank you, but always remember—giving is not about money, it is about kindness.” That day, something changed inside Saad. He started thinking about his own life. He realized that he had everything, yet he was always unhappy. On the other hand, this poor man had almost nothing, yet he was peaceful. Saad understood that the problem was not his life—the problem was his thinking. From that day, he decided to change himself. He stopped complaining about small things. He started appreciating what he had. He became kinder to people and more respectful to his parents. He also began helping others, not for show, but from his heart. One day, Saad went to meet the poor man again, but he was not there. He asked nearby people and found out that the man had left the place. Saad felt sad. He wanted to thank him for changing his life. But then he remembered the poor man’s words and smiled. He realized that the man had already given him the greatest gift—a new way of thinking. Years later, Saad became a successful person. But he never forgot the lessons he learned from that poor man. He often told others, “A man who had nothing taught me everything about life.” In life, we often believe that happiness comes from money, comfort, and success. But the truth is, happiness comes from gratitude, kindness, and peace of mind. Sometimes, the people who have the least teach us the most valuable lessons. We should never judge a person by their appearance or wealth because wisdom can come from anywhere. Moral: “True wealth is not what you have, but how you think and live your life.”
