The Owl That Saved My Life

Barn Owl

In the summer time if you lay in the fields you can see all the stars clearly in the sky. Jennifer loved to walk the fields at night as it was the only relaxation she had away from her daily hectic life. Every clear night she would grab a throw blanket and head to lay in the fields. As she walked past the barn and into the fields the air felt eerie and the atmosphere dark. As she continued to walk toward the fields she heard rustling behind her and stopped to listen. The rustling stopped so she continued walking. She placed her blanket down in the field and laid down peacefully.

As she watched the stars twinkle she dreamed of the life she wish she had. The endless shopping for whatever she wanted. Shopping at nice department stores that were not the local thrift store. Eating at fancy restaurants and not worrying how much the bill was. Going to Broadway shows in the city in evening gown. She even envisioned herself going on vacation to remote islands. The dreams were endless as the night went on.

After a few hours Jennifer picked up her blanket and headed back home. As she got closer to the barn she heard the rustling again and began to walk with her guard up. All of a sudden from behind her a hand grabbed her mouth. She tried to fight the person off but they dragged her into the barn. From behind her the man said, "You scream I will kill you." As she struggled she heard his zipper being unzipped. She was so scared she knew that if she let him rape her he would kill her anyway. She continued to struggle as he pulled her pants down. He threw her on a bed of hay and she screamed. He slapped her across the face and told her you scream again and I will cut your tongue out. He hit her again and told her she was going to take whatever he gave her. He turned her over and as he began to tie her legs together there was a noise from above. An Owl began to hoot over and over again. It appeared the man was startled by the owl. He pulled his pants up and ran to the door. From the corner of Jennifer's eyes she could see a light. She quickly pulled her pants up and ran screaming at the top of her lungs. She was able to run to the back of the barn in a secluded area. She stayed as quite as possible as she did not know if he was coming back. Her heart was beating as she heard someone walking toward her with a light. All of a sudden she heard a familiar voice say, “It is ok he is gone you can come out.” She slowly got up from the ground and walked into the opening. As she was in the opening she realized the person was her husband. He grabbed her and told her she was ok. Jennifer cried and told him what had happened and she said if it were not for the owl the man would have raped and killed her.

Jennifer’s husband whisked her off her feet and carried her home. He placed her on the couch and got some ice for her face. As Jennifer sat there crying her husband called the police. After speaking with the police and giving a full description she tried to lay in bed and get some rest. All she could think about was her family losing her at the hands of a monster. She barely got any rest and stayed in her bed all day as she was so terrified. But a thought came to her mind and she asked her husband to take her back to the barn. He was very hesitant but she promised him she really needed this. He walked her back to the barn and as they approached the barn there was yellow crime tape all around. The barn was dark however her husband had a lantern for light. For a few minutes Jennifer stood at the doorway and cried as she just looked around and finally she spotted it. She walked over and looked up on the ledge and said, “You saved my life and I will forever be grateful!” She was talking to the owl that startled the man and saved her life.
