The Orb and the Couch Potato: Tom’s Quest for Change

Part 2 : The Unfinished Symphony

By Enoch of MediocrecityPublished 2 years ago 2 min read

After his encounter with the mysterious orb, Tom didn’t give it much thought. Days turned into weeks, and the memory of the glowing entity faded into the background of his mind, overtaken by the usual comfort of his daily routine. But one afternoon, as he sat with his feet up on the coffee table, munching on a sandwich and half-watching a nature documentary, the familiar hum filled the room once more.

Tom sighed, realizing what was about to happen. Sure enough, the orb materialized before him, its light even more brilliant than before.

"Tom," the orb began, its voice carrying a tone of restrained excitement, "today I bring you an extraordinary opportunity. How would you like to meet Ludwig van Beethoven? To sit in the same room as one of the greatest composers of all time, and perhaps even help him as he works on his final symphony?"

Tom paused mid-bite, intrigued despite himself. "Beethoven, huh? That’s pretty cool. But, uh... what kind of help would he need? I don’t know anything about music."

"Your presence alone could be an inspiration," the orb explained. "To witness genius in action, to be a part of history—imagine the impact that could have on you, on your life!"

Tom chewed thoughtfully. The idea of meeting Beethoven did sound amazing, and he could almost picture himself sitting by the composer’s side, nodding appreciatively as the notes flowed from Beethoven’s mind to paper. But then reality set in.

"Wait," Tom said, frowning, "wouldn’t that mean I’d have to leave here? Like, actually get up and go to... what, 19th-century Vienna? What’s the weather like there? And how do people get around? Horses? I don’t think I’m up for that."

The orb’s light flickered, the disappointment palpable. "Tom, this is a chance to immerse yourself in the creation of something timeless. The Ninth Symphony! Imagine being there as the final notes are composed."

Tom hesitated, torn between the grandeur of the offer and his inherent laziness. "Yeah, but it’s just... you know, I’ve got my day kind of planned out. Finish this sandwich, maybe take a nap. And then there’s this new show I want to check out later. Maybe some other time?"

The orb dimmed, its energy faltering as it processed Tom’s response. "Very well," it said quietly. "But remember, such opportunities are rare. They may not come again."

With that, the orb vanished, leaving Tom alone once more. He finished his sandwich, the taste suddenly less satisfying than before. Beethoven could wait, he told himself. After all, there would always be another time.
